Just looked at the Hyundai i40 and noticed the kerbweight is 1659kgs and the braked towing weight is 1500kgs.
As the towing weight is lower than the kerbweight should I use the lower figure when working out my 85% or is it always the kerbweight I should go by as long as I don't exceed 1500kgs.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

85% of 1659 = 1410kg.   But thats a guideline, in your case it must not be more than 1500kg.
The lighter the better.

When did you pass your driving test? Prior or post 1997?

If post 1997 then you need to find the cars gross laden weight. The max tow could be 1300kg.
