Wondering how real life mpg compares to the advertised mpg eg as shown on autotrader. Our sorento is 10yrs old and has done 78k miles, it's an automatic driven fairly gently and prob averages 20 mpg in normal life (~17-22mpg average for a tank). Can't say I was chuffed when I worked that figure out. At some point in the future we'll buy a newer sorento or similar car and I was wondering how much our poor mpg is down to the age of the car and how much is just real life in comparison to manufacturers test results.

Is yours the diesel or petrol and is it one with the old 4 speed autobox?
I think the next Sorento improved on mileage and power then improved more again with the latest models.
If your is petrol then the mileage is not too bad, I have a diesel Rangie and get around 22mpg around the doors and 29mpg on a long run but the petrol ones average around 17mpg with the 4.6 versions down around 14mpg.
Oh, and don't believe the manufacturers mpg figures they are not done on real roads and traffic, some are close but others can be way off.
The only cars I have driven that come anywhere near the mpg figures are German,VW and Audi. Nothing else I have used have come close. Vauxhall diesel claimed 55mpg, even driving at a steady 55 on the motorway showed 41 on the computer and I think to average 41 would take a very steady driver. The VW and Audi regularly returned 45 to 50 without really trying.
From what I have been looking at for myself the next newer model with the 5 speed auto gets in the mid 30's mpg, I have been toying with the idea of one myself rather than an L322 Rangie as the diesel ones have gearbox issues (GM box) so would have to be the 4.4 petrol.
When we towed I had two Sorento's a 56 plate and 59 plate so both the original model although the 59 plate was an upgrade of the initial one. I don't think your consumption is anything to do with age. Both mine, autos, were purchase new and had relatively low mileage when I traded them in. My economy varied between 18mpg running around town, high twenties on longer runs. When towing I got around 21/23mpg. Interestingly I get better economy with my now motorhome!!! If you were looking at the official mpg figures, for Kia I would deduct 20% to get a more real world figure. I now have a Kia Venga as my everyday car and the economy of that is nowhere near the official figures. I could of course be a very uneconomical driver!!!
That's interesting Speedy. We live ~1hr's drive away from any motorway. Often when we go on the motorway we are towing so that would explain why we don't find a significant difference in fuel consumption when towing long distances. You can almost see the fuel gauge drop as you overtake tractors on single carriageway roads round here!

Yep, I have to keep an eye on mpg, as I currently get 14p per mile for "cough" business miles with the firms car I drive.
From memory the 12 plate VW Golf 5dr Hatch 1.6 TDi BlueMotion Mk6 has an advertised mpg of 80mpg.
I will regularly brim the tank, and work out the mpg from a full use of the available 55lt tank.
In just over 2 years from new, the best I have ever got is 52mpg. and when towing a half ton trailer in France that has dropped to 46mpg, although I do go at 81mph on the autoroute, so that low figure could easily be pushed up.
I change over to the Mk7 model next month, so it will be interesting to see if that can do any better, as the Mk7 does have a claimed better mpg than the mk6.
I have a 2009 updated original model Sorento diesel auto, currently with 102000 miles on the clock. I don't know what it does when my wife's just driving locally, but I get an average of 28mpg over a tank, brim to brim.
hi my merc e 320 diesal does 44 mpg solo and towing about 28 mpg i used to have a 4x4 but now you got hard standing pitches you dont need a big gas guzzling 4x4 cheers .tom
