Hi all, i have just changed my caravan. Hopefully will be getting an s max. 2lt diesel tdci auto. Does anyone on here tow with one and if so, does it pull ok?

We used to tow with a Galaxy with the same engine and gearbox and it was a very capable and relaxing tow car to drive. We only towed around 1150 kg which the car managed very easily and I felt it would have coped with 1500 kg fairly easily even if loaded with kids etc.I'm sure it will be just as good with your Challenger and make life easier for you.
If it's the same 2 ltr. diesel that they put in the Focus estate it's a very robust punchy engine. The one I had was a 2007 model with 136 BHP & 251 Lbs./ft. engine torque but mine was a six speed manual gearbox. Even though I consider it to be a work horse in terms of pulling power I could average around 57 mpg. solo taking it steady on the motorway. The laden weight of my caravan was 1300 kgs. and had no problems pulling up motorway inclines so if your caravan is around the same weight you should expect the same sort of performance.
I had one for 4 years (not auto) a brilliant tow car and fantastic everyday car, massive in every way buy drives and handles like a small car.
we towed 1500kgs with ours and could get 32/33 mpg on a run to Cornwall ours was the 2 ltr 140bhp version.
I would happily of got another when mine went back but unfortunately it was not available,
If I had got one that would of meant that I'd of had one for a straight 8 years, something that I normally would never do, I think that says it all really
How new an Smax are you looking at? The newer ones with the power shift gear box can be a bit hesitant when towing. Fortunately the 2.2 comes with an older 6 speed auto which has no issues other than a love for diesel ........

Hi Mike, it is a 2010 model!
It will probably have the powershift gearbox then. It is imperative the gearbox oil has been changed as recommended by ford. I think it's every 2 years or 40000 miles.
Well I've picked up the car this morning. Very pleased so far. Day off tomorrow, so going to the coast just for a few hours! Wont be trying it for towing till mayday weekend!
