hi everyone, I was about to give my daughter and boyfriend my trailer tent only for them to discover they cant fit a towbar to his 3 series BMW 320ed ! we have done abit of searching on the net an discovered that technically this is true, however (possibly if an engine mount and fan is changed) it can be sorted ? Does anyone on here have anymore accurate info please or solution. ?
According to BMW website, on current ed models towbar can be fitted to estate version but can only be fitted to saloon version with Steptronic transmission. You would need to speak to BMW garage, if they say no then thats it, otherwise car would not be insurable.
Have you seen this? It suggests car can be modified to tow but I guess cost might be rather high. In the link it mentions that if no gross train weight(combined allowable max weight of car & trailer)is indicated on Vin plate then car cannot tow but it does not make it clear if car can tow after modifications even if no gtw is indicated on Vin plate.
At the end of it, the way you could come badly unstuck is if after a bad accident that is investigated by insurance assessor it is found that car should not have been towing you would not get a payout.
