hello, can someone tell me if its ok to tow a 2 berth caravan with a 1.6 ford focus please ?. not got a clue about weights but think the focus can tow up to 1200 kgs but not sure. im driving on grandfathers rights.
Its a 2001 1.6petrol hTchback manual. Hoping i can tow a light 2 berth for me and my ten yr old son. We wont be doing high miles...50 to 80 mile trips at a time....hope this helps
A 2001 Focus is a Mk.I which the towball noseweight limit is only 50 kgs. I believe so regarding a caravan noseweight it's doubtful whether you will be able to tow much more than a trailer tent. On the Mk.II onwards the towball weight limit increased to 75 kgs. but you need to confirm this first with a professional towbar fitter.

I towed a 1200kg award with a Rover 820se that had a noseweight limit of 50 kg and it towed like a dream.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
A couple of years ago I pitched next to a 1991 Lunat Meteor ( 14' two berth ) being towed by a ml 1 Focus 1.6 and they had used that outfit for years very successfully. There are lots of early 90s lightweight two berths out there many are really nice vans to live in.

The max tow is probably 1200kg, But the car probably weighs approx 1050kg.
Do not exceed the 1050kg.
The greater weight of the caravan to the car the more control the caravan has over your direction of travel.
Its recommended that the caravan should be upto 85% of the cars kerbweight, in your case your looking for a caravan with a gross laden weight of 900kg or less.
Beware sellers that give the caravans unladen weight or MIRO weight.
