Let's get a few things straight.
Freelanders aren't a true 4X4, they have front wheel drive which runs slightly faster than the rear wheels, the rears are driven through what is called the IRD unit and a Torsen-type coupling.
Most faults are pretty well known and you can disconnect the propshaft and run on front wheel drive only if you wanted to.
2006-on are the better buy, and although the 1.8 K series engine was a problem, Land Rover sorted that out so late models should be fine.
Discoveries are another matter entirely.
Discovery 1's have bad body corrosion, particularly the boot floor and inner wings. Chassis seem not to suffer too much, but the youngest is 17 years old now, so not a good idea.
Discovery 2's have a problem with the chassis rusting behind the rear axle. Repair chassis sections can be bought, it isn't a huge job but competent welding is needed.
The body suffers almost no corrosion issues, other than the inner wings at the front.
Our two Discovery V8's are 1999 registered, mine was produced in November 1998 so getting on a bit.
I'd have a Discovery 2 over a Freebielander any day.
