Hi all, I'm new to caravaning and need to get a towbar fitted to my 2003 Vauxhall zafira. I'm a proud owner of a 1986 compass echo 340/2. She's a small van so my zafira shouldn't have a problem. But what type of tow bar do I need to have fitted?

Firstly you need to identify what type of hitch is fitted to the caravan because if it's a stabiliser hitch then a fixed 'swan neck' or 'detachable' is fine but if you have a 'fixed flange' towball fitted (the type with 2 x mounting bolts) then you will require an Alko towball to allow movement of the hitch otherwise the caravan will detach. If the hitch is a standard type (non stabiliser) then any type of towball is okay to have fitted. If the vehicle has reversing sensors then make sure that the towing socket is mounted out of detection preferably under the bumper.

Swan neck towbar looks neatest and is ok for both stabiliser and non stabiliser hitch so go for that.

Does your caravan have 1 or 2 cables to plug into car? Ie do you want to run fridge and charge caravan battery while towing? If so you need twin 12n and 12s sockets fitted to towbar. If just road lights on caravan are ok then cheaper just to fit single 12n socket
