Hi,
We are taking our caravan to Scotland for the first time and would like to travel from Glasgow to Inverness. I've been recommended to go via Perth though we would much prefer to travel up through Fort William. However, I've read such conflicting reports about the unsuitability for towing along this route esp round the North of Loch Lomond that we're a bit apprehensive now. I would really appreciate any advice from fellow caravanners who have gone by the more scenic route.
If you want to tow north of Glasgow and go along the shores of Loch lomond and on to Inverness do it. It is a gorgeous drive more so when you get north of Loch Lomond. There is a short section of the road by Loch Lomond just north of Tarbet that winds a bit but it is a road quite able to take two HGVs along all its length.
Going Glasgow to Imverness via Perth is a days drive, going via Fort William I would allow at least two days and have a stop near Fort William.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
The Loch Lomond road is VERY scenic but a nightmare in the summer if you are anxious to make progress. It is about 6 hrs (ish).
Going via Perth is about 4.5 and much kinder on the nerves.
The A 82 is almost entirely two lane, twisty and full of traffic.
If you want to see Scotland, A82
you want to get to Inverness, A9.

how on earth is it a days drive or 2 if going via fort William! its 3 1/2 via perth and 4 via fort william
You obviously travel faster than me with your van behind you. My journeys are part of my holiday, I rarely go more than a couple of hours without stopping for a good break and rarely start earlier than 10am or finish later than 4.
The drive via Fort William is superb but to really appreciate it, it deserves an overnight stop somewhere to soak up the atmosphere and just enjoy life.
