Hi there

I'm new to towing and I'm planning a trip just outside greater London. Around trip of 400km in a 3L turbo Toyota Hilux Surf with a Abbey GTS415 and was tying to work out how much it would cost in diesel just a wild guess.
I shall be sticking to motorway driving so a constant speed. I class myself as an alright driver not on brakes like mad as I'm a driving instructor so I know that will help with cost.
Any help would be welcome.

Regards Lulubel

Rough guess at least 25mpg towing with that so 10gallons=about 46litres. So at supermarket diesel prices about £55. Motorway services diesel prices can be 10-12p/litre higher than supermkt prices so fill up off motorway. Just cruise along with the trucks at 56mph for economical fuel use.

If you can keep to 56mph then its surprising at how much fuel you can save.

Normally when towing i get low 30's in my Mondeo diesel, But when in fairly heavy traffic but moving at 50 - 56mph i was getting 39mpg.

I wouldnt be happy doing 50mph normally if the motorway was free flowing but keeping up with the trucks and mostly staying in the left lane does help save fuel.

Finding the peak torque can also help, I found the torque to be a bit weak in 6th gear and foound staying in 5th and not exceeding 60mph gave the best economy. If i changed upto 6th it still pulled well but used more fuel.
