Hi all,
I tow a caravan with a 13 pin euro socket on and my previous car had a 13 pin socket on, however I am about to change motor and it already has the fitted twin electrics on fitted by Land Rover.
My question is would the 13 pin to 2x 7 pin adaptor work everything on the caravan, ie battery charger and fridge and fog lights, also reversing lights? Or do I need to change the electrics to a 13 pin? The car is a Discovery 3.
Many thanks in advance.
Yes, it should work everything if wired correctly, but it would not cost that much to have both cables on car to be wired into a 13pin socket, its a diy job for anybody that can do wiring. Even at workshop rates you can subtract price of adaptor which is £20odd.
As Billy x rightly says, this is an easy enough job. Arm yourself with drawings/diagrams of existing 7 pin sockets etc., (useful link for 12N/S & 13pin wiring), make yourself familiar with wiring and you can easily retrofit a new 13pin socket onto the existing cables.
Make careful notes as you remove the existing sockets (the terminal wiring numbers of the 12N correspond the same onto a 13pin) and you shouldn't go wrong.
In my opinion, this is a better solution as the use of adaptors can introduce the chance of failure with additional (un-necessary) connections.
Take care if you decide to use an adapter, I used one and had to fasten the cable to stop it touching the ground. Everything worked ok just watch the extra length.
That's what I was getting at Checkley. Both Westfield and I have the Discovery 3 and it looks nigh on impossible to get at to change the socket.

Are you using a detachable tow bar or fixed.
If it's a fixed a thirteen pin socket will be easier as it sits beside it, if using detachable stick with the two seven pins and you use an adapter. I use one and never had a problem with it at all.
Oh and if using a Disco 3 detachable Google this and it will show some stories of them coming off while in use.
