Sorry guys I know this has been asked a million times but I'm trying to work out if our car is capible of towing certain size caravans if any. Just brought a trailer for the camping side which is great, now the wife has informed me she wants to try a caravan!!! Our vehicle is a 2011 Renault megane 3, 1.5 dci 110 bhp. Been through the handbook to check the weights etc, which told me to refere to the car. Went out to the car and the only info plate I can find is on the drivers side rear door and has a list of different weights. As follows and in the order of how the appear on the plate.
1779 kg
3079 kg
1-0990 kg
2-0920 kg
Hope this makes sense and hopefully someone will be able to tell me if its capable and what size types etc we could look at.
1779 kg max gross, ie fully loaded weight.
3079 kg max gross train weigh, ie max weight of car+caravan.
1-0990 kg max front axle weight
2-0920 kg max rear axle weight
From memory max tow weight for car is 1300kg but you want a caravan of no more than about 1100kg for a safe tow.
Many thanks for the prompt reply, I don't suppose off top of your head what sort of style, type, berth caravan to start looking at? Complete novice to this as you can probably tell!
Depends on budget, but at 1100kg think medium/small, not large. If you go for something older, 1990s then they tend to be lighter for size but as with all secondhand caravans you need to check very carefully for damp.
You can get fairly light 6 berth caravans and very heavy 2 berth one.
You just need to ignore the larger caravans and go for something that has less equipment or a bit older.
My missus keeps saying we should get a smaller van and i keep pointing out the smaller van she likes the look of actually weighs quite a bit more than our current van.
No, 1100kg would be fully loaded caravan, ie max gross loaded weight known on caravans as mtplm. Caravan needs to be somewhat lighter than car for safety, you have large side area subject to cross winds.
Car max tow weight as in handbook is a technical figure, meaning car is capable of moving that weight from standstill on hill. Towing safety is a separate issue that car manufacturer does not advise on.
we have a Swift Anniversary 360 - small, lightweight 2 berth so this is well under the recommendation for 85% at ~69%. 1100kg is around the maximum you should be aiming for all in at 85% as Billy x said.
If you give people on here an idea of budgets and needs then I'm sure the experienced members will chip in with some suggestions of manufacturers/models to keep an eye out for...
Brilliant advice, looking to spend around £1000, limited budget I know but need to see if we like it and enjoy towing it. Don't mind year etc as long as it's solid. Complete novice to this side of things so don't know anything about makes models etc. if we are happy after a year or so which I'm sure we will be as we've camped in tents for a long time now, well upgrade the car and caravan and will be back on for more advice!!!
We bought ours for the same reason and had a similar budget. Took months of looking and many wasted journeys but if you're persistent you'll find one. You have to be quick though, the good ones get snapped up really quickly!! We absolutely love it though and are considering our upgrade already so worth the sweat and tears in the end!
Hi guys, looking at small caravans as obviously limited to what I can tow as per previous messages, seen an Avondale Kestral 2 berth today, think it was 980kg unladen and 1120kg laden. Would this be a safe tow for my Renault megane as previously
Discussed with the weights etc? I find this a nightmare working out the towing limits etc.
A very useful outfit checking website is www.whattowcar.com a free to use site that gives tow reports for many makes and models of cars and caravans. The Caravan Club also run a similar service eith by phone or on their website.
