i am a pensioner, i used to tow a caravan some years ago but find that everything has changed since then. my problem is that i have a 2014 sri vauxhall zafira tourer non stop/start manual gearbox, 165 bhp. i do not know how to read the new type vin plate. if i put the details on here would someone kindly help me out with this please, so i know how much i can tow. my plate reads.

Max train weight is 3950kg and the max gross weight is 2425kg suggesting that the manufacturers towing limit would be 1525kg.

The other two figures are the front axle max load and the rear acle max load.

For safety and good practice you should also look at your V5 document and find the Mass in Service figure for the car and if this is less than the max tow weight you should consuder that to be the maximum though you would be advised to consider something less than this value. The recommendation is 85% of this figure for someone new to towing but up to 100% with experience.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

hi bill,
          thank you very much for such a fast reply. i passed my driving test in the swinging sixte`s, i have been ofered a 2 berth caravan with
MPTLM 1350 KG
MIRO 1074 KG
so can i assume that my car will pull it and i am within the towing laws.

I think that would be a very good assumption. Your Mondeo will like playing with that.

Max legal weight for caravan is 1350
You can load 276 kgs into the caravan
Your can tow an actual weight of 1525
Your car probably weighs about 1900 empty so will be at least 2000 when towing
The 85% guideline for towing caravans would be 1700 in your case so easily copes with 1350

The rules now are probably the same when you last towed
Do not exceed
Vehicle GVW GTW or towing capacity
Caravan MTPLM

You then need to make sure that the tow hitch max weight is not exceeded
