Just wondering what people on here use/ recommend as good towing cars. Currently have a Volvo V70 2000 reg. 2.4 petrol auto but wondering if anyone has anything else known to be a good towing ( & general non towing) car. Think the old girl ( van not wife) may be needing retirement soon as struggled towing. Ideas most welcome ;-)

We have a Volvo S80 its got 120k on clock and tows like a dream. Its an 08 plate but only worth about 5k trade in. We are hanging on to it for at least another year and having an 8 week trip to Europe later this year plus day to day. We intend to swap it for an xc60, year old or a new santa fe but prefer Volvo.
At the end of this thread the op will have been recommended every car that is capable of towing a caravan & each of those cars will be an equally capable non towing car.
Even though I have never owned one or even driven one I would recommend a diesel Mondeo on this basis...
The Mondeo represents best value for money as it is less desirable than almost any other other car so costs the least secondhand but mechanically it is equally as good as any other car & is an equally capable towcar.
One has to assume here that the op seeks maximum value for money & cost effectiveness above all else.
The Mondeo is the to the caravanner as the Lexus is to the luxury car buyer, a triumph of cost effectiveness over style & sheer joy that comes from owning a top of range Merc or Beemer.
Should the op be considering style & desirability to any degree above sheer cost effectiveness, then he needs to disregard this post.
Cheers folks. Will do some research on those. Had the Volvo in to the garage today ( suspension bushes) but prob looking to upgrade sooner rather than later. She is 15yrs old now!
Was wondering about an xc90 but it'll go on my list of cars to investigate over the weekend. Cheers once again!

I have towed with a a volkswagon passat tdi, peugeot 406 3 ltr petrol, renault laguna tdci. All have towed within their capacity excellently and as an everyday car have been brilliant although the 406 was a little thirsty.
Basically any family saloon with a 1.9tdci will do the job well. just choose the shape and toys.
If I had to buy my own used car, for towing a caravan, then the choice would be simples Diesel Octavia Estate or better still Skoda Superb Estate, both cheap as chips used and just the same as any other VAG offering.
You mentioned looking at an XC90. I have had one for a year now and it is a fab car and great for towing. They are a bit thirsty for everyday town driving but no more than you would expect for a car of that size. Towing I get between 22 - 24mpg.
