Looking at doing my b+e test and currently have vaxuall zafira 2.0dti and it hasnt got a very high towing capacity 1100kg so im after run of the mill cars that have a good towing weight must be a good family car and disel thanks any help is great
You need to be more concerned with high kerbweight not actual tow weight which is just tecnical figure based on car ability to move that weight from a standing start on hill. For example current Mondeo has 1800kg max tow weight and similar sized car like Skoda 4x4 has 2tonne max tow but unwise to tow a caravan of that weight.
What you are aiming for is max caravan weight somewhat less than loaded weight of towcar. Probably Mondeo diesel would be best and most cost effective towcar but keep to caravan of less than kerbweight of car.
Mondeo is a great towcar, kerbweight for mine is 1675kg. Not expensive to run, 48mpg generally long gtrips not hurried 55mpg towing 30 to 35mpg. Very stable towcar and very comfortable and quiet all the time.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

The estate 2.0TDi 4x4 variant would be better with a GVW of 2,095kg, so with a van of say 1,350kg mtplm, no B+E needed, you would have a tow ratio of 90%.
