Hi there,
We are about to acquire an Avondale Perle Orestes which belonged to my aunt. We need to get new tyres and the official user manual dating back to 1982 states tyres: 145R13-74S.
However, when trying to get these tyres I am being told they are quite thin.
I am not sure what is on there at the mo as the caravan is in Norfolk and we are in Essex. We go there next week to collect. Do I get those exact tyres or can I opt for different?
Any help is appreciated

If its a lightweight caravan under 850kg all up then you should be able to fit 155/80x13 car tyres. These are available no problem.

Hi there Billy,
Thanks for the quick reply. I have no clue what I am doing so am glad I found this website.....
The Perle brochure says the Max Gross weight is 695kg.
Its a 2berth 11ft caravan.
Do you still support the 155/80x13 tyre?

I have found a tyre place near where the caravan is stored (Norfolk) and they can order the 145R13. Should I order them anyway, plus the 155/80 just to be sure..... We only have 1 day to travel there and back so need to get it right so we can ride it back home to Essex. The tyre place can take back the unwanted one within 10 days of purchase.....

Thanks ever so

I'd go for the 155, they are of adequate load rating for caravan provided they fit under wheel arch ok, they should do, they are little bigger all round than 145. Also with 155 you will have a good choice of well known brands, about £40 each for mid range.

sorry if this is a silly question, but would I then have to buy bigger wheels if I go for the 155?

NO

If you take the van to the fitters, they will fit the modern equivalent, given that tyres types, and construction have moved on.

Hi Skoda Bob,
Thanks. Do I need to go to a specialist caravan place or just a tyre shop? Sorry - but i really don't know anything about this.....
Thanks

No just any tyre fitters, National Tyres or whatever. They will fit tyres and balance wheels same as car. They may not have tyres in stock but can get them for next day. You can use same wheels.

If you can jack up caravan, put on axle stands and take wheels to fitters this will be easiest way. Or ask if it would be ok to take caravan to them. Otherwise you need to use mobile service to come to caravan. Look on etyres website or ATS do mobile service as well.

Mel, as you "have no clue what I am doing" I'd better mention that the 'van should not be jacked up by using the corner steadies, just in case you thought of doing so!

in addition to the above advice. DO NOT allow van to be jacked under the chassis side rails only place jack under the axle or the plate behind the wheel through which the axle connects to, any where else could cause damage to the chassis

Take the van to any tyre centre that has easy access, get them to fit 2 tyres, they will more than likely remove the wheels while the van is outside, pay for them and go on your merry way.

PS, try to avoid quick fit they are useless.

155 x 13 is the correct size for a 1990 (ish) Orestes, 35 psi tyre pressure.

£120 fitted and balanced? Your are joking are you not?

They should be between £30 and £40 each ALL in fully fitted and balanced etc. And they are a higher load rating than the original recommended tyres.

Get yourself a new Brother in Law.

Check the online tyre prices where your local tyre shop fits them. They are all well below £60 a tyre.

£60 in the till and £60 in his pocket?

Hankook on the Kwikfit website = £41.50 fully fitted.

Needed new front break pads on my Kia Carens, went to quick fit, went back 45 mins later your cars ready paid drove off, went to stop at a junction, and bang the calliper was left dangling, drove it back round oh sorry closed for today, told them sort it now or a brick goes through the window, or I would get the police who live next door, they took it in and sorted it they had left the 2 bolts out.
reported them to the head office and received a full refund
