A fair percentage of people buy a car because they like the colour and radio 4 works, they may have no idea what engine it has never mind the spec.
It can be an afterthought as they drive away and ask what fuel do i put in?
Want to guess on how many cars never have the bonnet open between services?
We had to fit some boxes for a company that wanted to know if its drivers were doing regular checks of the engine etc.
Just a small box with a switch that recorded a time and date of when it was triggered.
Turned out that very few actually checked the fluid levels.
You dont need to believe their figures to buy a car, If you had to then none of them would sell any cars.
I am consistently amazed by how blinkered some people can be about what other people do. I check levels, but the only one I have had to do anything at all with this century has been the windscreen washer.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Err blinkered? This was a box supplied by a company that had a small box/chip that logged the time/date when the bonnet opened between services.
The company must have had a system where the drivers were supposed to check the levels and they wanted to see how many actually did. How is that blinkered?
Have you ever serviced a 4 - 6 year old car with the original filters fitted? I have.
What do you think of blinkered people that assume a modified car is driven too fast everyday and overtakes and the merest sniff of a gap ahead and that it guzzles fuel like an oil tanker?
A couple of messages ago somebody who shall remain nameless suggested that people buy cars because they like the colour and radio 4 works.
I rest my case

You maybe surprised at how little some people know about their cars.
Ask BMW 1 series owners which wheels are driven and a high percentage will say the front.
A nice colour and radio 4 working sums up my needs for a vehicle.
A mate of mine has had 3 BMW x5's remapped and a Audi A7, all were very powerful cars to start with and all were brand new, The reason he did its was to increase the power and ti increase his fuel economy, on a run to abersoc his fuel figures were not a million miles from my Mondeo and he was driving a 3ltr X5
All 3 cars were serviced by BMW and Audi with no issues, i also have a customer that has a new 7 series BMW and that has been remapped again for economy reasons, he aint a boy racer he's actually in his late 60's

Ahh, so you are the one you were describing.

I think I could get 30 -31 mpg if i took the bikes off the roof.
Harrogate to Southwait services 29mpg then continuied to Larkhall average mpg dropped to 27mpg at 60mph. Probably due to the amount of long inclines going up the M6/M74
I've covered a 1000 miles this past 2 weeks all types of roads various methods of driving, 5th gear 6th gear torque bands etc as suggested in previous posts. I am an experienced driver and being towing caravans for 7 years over many miles and I have no idea how anyone can claim to be getting mid to high thirty's or even into the forties.
Over the last 2 weeks I have found that my car performs best when sitting at 60mph in 6th gear.
Spooky that carwow just posted the results of a survey on car buyers criteria for 2015.
No.3 Colour.
No.2 MPG we all know the figures given are ficticious and do not relate to the real world so buyers probably chose that because there was no Radio 4 option.
Just a quick update. I was away at the weekend and this time left the bikes at home, so nothing nothing on the roof. It was a 180mile round trip in perfect weather conditions and I returned 31.6 mpg. At an average speed of 55mph.
Came back from France last week, the first tow with my Mondeo after having it remapped. The car is a 2.2 tdci estate and averaged 33.1 mpg (brim to brim) 33.6 mpg (according to trip).
This was an increase of approximately 3 mpg on the exact trip last year towing the same van of 1450kg.
The car when solo will normally average about 47mpg and on a recent long motorway trip averaged 53mpg over 400 miles.
The car now has 224 bhp and 470 nm of torque depending on the accuracy of the rolling road where it was done.
The insurance company Hastings Direct increased my premium by £22 per annum for the modification
