Evening all,

I completed yesterday my B and E trailer test as I recently changed our tow car and it put me over the 3.5 tonne MAM rule.
Could somebody clarify exactly what I can now tow? I find the direct Gov website not very definitive or I might be just looking in the wrong section.

Category B+E allows vehicles up to 3,500kgs MAM to be combined with trailers more than 750kgs MAM, but not exceeding 3,500kgs MAM and the total weight must not be more than 7,000kgs MAM. Construction and use regulations may also apply

You can tow up to 3,500kgs as long as the outfit of car and caravan does not go over 7,000kgs
you would meed a big car to tow 3.500kgs though.

Afternoon,
Thanks all for the responses, the information confirmed what I thought.
I found the training and test not only informative but realistic for every day towing, ironing out 15 years of bad habits and showing new techniques.
I can also recommend PJE driver training in Hereford (who I am no way affiliated with) and especially Kev their training instructor for trailers, top bloke and top service.

With B+E the legal rules are easy

Take the lower of either the vehicle towing capacity or the trailer MAM and use that as the max actual weight you can tow

The test comprised of three different sections.
First part was the uncoupling and recoupling of the trailer, all common sense really with some safety related questions. Incorrect procedure can result in minor test faults a serious mistake like missing a brake cable will be a major.
Second part was the reversing manoeuvre, basically going backwards into a coned space in the diagonal opposite of the start position of the course.You are allowed upto two "shunts" where you can pull forward and reposition the car but these will incur a minor point each. Touching the cones is classed as a major fault.
Lastly was the actual drive itself. It started with five questions relating to safety, ie checking tyres and how to demist the windows etc. The drive on the road then lasted just over an hour, incorporating some dual carriageway, residential etc. The same as a normal driving test, no more than four minor faults in any section before it becomes a major.
A total of fifteen minor faults are allowed before failing. Cost of the test is £125. The two day, one to one course including the cost of the test and the use of their vehicle and trailer was £535 including Vat.

The B+E test
No medical or theory test required
Read a number plate from a certain distance

This is interesting BUT NOT RECOMMENDED – a B licence towing set up can be presented for the B+E test but L plates must be used for the test that means you can train yourself, go to test by yourself, fit L plates, do the test, then, pass or fail, remove L plates and drive away by yourself.
