Evening All,

Has anybody else got a built in Ford Satnav?
I am trying to input French addresses for a forthcoming holiday but it won't let me input their version of the postcode. I can find the general area but would ideally like to be more accurate as it then wont let me input any further detail.
I am curious to know if I am doing it wrong or it doesn't have that capabilaty?
The car is a 2010 Mondeo with a converse+ system using an SD card as its data source.

Thanks

Steve

Only the UK has such detailed postcodes. French ones cover a large area. Therefore they are of little use on any satnav system.

The solution is to use co-ordinates. Almost all, if not all, satnavs will allow you to input co-ordinates. Use Google maps to find your campsite, point to it and use your right mouse button. Click on "What's there" and it will give the co-ordinates. Its remarkably accurate too.

Our Focus has a built in sat nav and it takes co-ordinates, it takes us ages to sort it out because we don't use the sat nav very often and we're never sure which co-ordinates we should be using as there are 2 different methods of listing co-ordinates.

The sat nav worked well in France, in fact it seemed better than it is in England. The only problem we did have was when it stopped working whilst towing back up to the Loire, eventually discovered the SD card had not been pushed in far enough (Thomas Bee) and had dropped out just enough to look normal but not work.

Evening All,

After frequent banging of head against a wall I twigged the problem was that the SD card was GB and MRE (Main roads europe) and as i have no intention of pitching the tin tent on their version of the M5 i will need the ability to input more detail.

Could somebody please confirm who has a Uk and Western Europe mapping SD card fitted tell me what level of detail they can input with a French address?

The car is a 2010 Titanium x with what i believe is an FX satnav system, I am guessing an SD card for Western Europe from 2010 will be a straight replacement?

Any help would be appreciated

I have found the maps, just curious as to whether its worth the cost to update to a Europe SD card only to find it gives no further detail than the system I am using already.

It looks like you only have uk only at the moment, it wont harm to update to virtually the whole of Europe, its best to update every 2 years, that way you will have any new roads that may have been built, or 1 way streets that may have changed, before you buy just ask the sellers questions, like do the maps contain points of interest like filling stations restaurants or better still speed cameras

I'm a bit OTT when it comes to satnavs and I really like to be sure it's taking me where I want to go, especially abroad.

I start with Google Maps and pinpoint exactly where I need to be - down to where exactly the campsite entrance is using streetview to be certain.

Once I'm sure I programme that exact spot into the satnav - if it's a car system I print off the map to take in the car so I can be sure I'm accurate.

Our Smax has the sd card sat nav with full euro mapping.

Detail is great, including down to the roads on the sites we have been on.!

You change the country to France, input, the district code and then the street name,. The only thing is the streets can be a bit trial and error as some times it's the street name , rue or ave or rue / ave ....... Etc.

I always plug where we are going to before we leave the UK then just call them up from the memory before we go.

The easiest one to use is the one that begins N.... or W... and gives the co-ordinates in degrees and decimals of a degree.
eg. N51.178858, W1.826201

or 51.178858, -1.826201

The first co-ordinate will always be positive in the northern hemisphere. A minus figure for the second co-ordinate signifies west, a positive figure signifies east. (Greenwich will have the second co-ordinate at zero.)

If you copy these co-ordinates into the Google search box, you should find a very famous place.

Using the method I gave above for finding co-ordinates from Google maps is very accurate. We navigated accurately to 30 campgrounds in the US and Canada this summer without any problem.

I did the same this year but it was £78 for the full Europe mapping. It also updated the firmware on the sat nav too.
