Hi all, after reading many, many websites about towing limits, weights etc. I'm more confused than ever. In a nutshell, I'm looking at getting a 1.6hdi c4 grand Picasso. The kerb weight is in the 1500kg region but the towing limit says 1180kg.
I have a pre 1997 licence and am a reasonably experienced tower but need to clarify if the 1180 is a legal thing or just advisory (I think it's just advisory).
Does anyone one here tow a van of around 1400 mtplm with one and if so, how does it perform?
The C4GP has a low max tow weight. The 1180 is the max and must not be exceeded it's not advisory. Check that the max tow weight still allows a fully loaded car for you to stay within the gross train weight. We had all these problems when we had our Picasso so changed to a Galaxy, not as economical but reliable and will tow 1500kg easily.
Thanks Rob, further confusion though now because I've read elsewhere that the towing limits are advisory and that only the plated figures are the legal limits!
Thank for the reply though, it's appreciated.
Hi, yes the plated figures are the official, legal weights. However, Citroen and Renault list the weights in a strange way that causes all this confusion. If you look at a Citroen brochure it may say for example max tow 1500kg but this is when the vehicle only contains the driver so the weight of passengers and luggage has to be deducted from the max towing weight.
If you look at the weight plate on a C4GP and deduct the max car weight from the gross train weight I think you are left with a max tow of 1050kg but the brochure states 1180kg when transferring the weight allowance from the car but the gross train weight must not be exceeded. My figures are from memory with the 1.6 diesel EGS model but they illustrate the problem. If you have a look at a Citroen Picasso brochure I expect the new model shows the weights in the same way.
I would not want to try towing 1400kg with the 1.6. We towed our Ranger (1180 MTPLM) with the Focus which has the same engine, it copes fairly well until it comes to steep hills but that's with 2 people and fairly lightly loaded. That engine wouldn't cope with 1400kg, a bigger car and loads of luggage and kids. The 2.0 Picasso would be better or the Galaxy I mentioned. Our Galaxy was a 2.0 diesel auto, kerb weight of 1750 ish and was very happy towing at the legal max with the Ranger. I always felt it would be able to cope with a full load of kids etc and a bigger caravan.
The reason for low tow weight is towing capability, large car, small engine so low tow weight. With that power to weight ratio it will struggle at that weight.
If you can run to 2litre version it has higher tow weight.
It does, but all the 2 litres have the EGS gearbox which many people hate and professional reviews suggest are starting to fail miserably and expensively!
there could be an insurance issue if something goes wrong and it is found that you exceeded the cars tow weight limit. As suggested earlier go for the 2.0l
There is a manual gearbox version of the 2.0 diesel. When we were looking at the Picasso range there was a mention of the 2.0 with EGS and an automatic, I always wondered if this was just a mistake in the brochure or if they did a conventional automatic as well.
We changed our C4GP when we moved up to a caravan. According to the towmatch guides it was not a stable match. (Now have a Seat Alhambra). At the time I contacted the C&CC technical help and they said it had a low tow limit because it was basically a small car (the standard C4) with a large body on it, so the towing capabilities were similar to the C4.

We have had 2 C4 Grand Picasso's and very happily towed a Bailey Ranger MTPLM of 1237. Never any probs, we have on a couple of occassions been at the max for the van but still the car towed brilliantly.. We did however have 1 of the 6 gear 2.0ltr diesel EGS and 1 2.0ltr diesel manual, no probs at all. Dont over fill, pack correctly and dont speed.
