I wonder if you can offer any advice please. Last week we purchased a 2013 Hyundai i30 tourer and had a witter fixed swan neck towbar fitted in order to tow our Elddis Shamal xl 2000 model.

On paper and in the tow check all seemed great. However we have found that the towbar is grounding as it seems very low to the ground (15cm clearance with 2 children and moderate weight in the back). We had 2 rubber spring assistors fitted to each side but are still grounding the towbar on lumps and bumps even without the caravan on the back.

We have spoken to witter and the towbar fitter and both say that the towbar is the correct one for the car and it's just how they are made so they don't have to cut into the bumper.

We are looking at getting some Greyston auxillary spring assisters fitted but don't know if this is going to solve the problem. Basically we are tearing our hair out and feel we have made a very expensive mistake.

Can you offer any advice on a possible solution other than giving up caravanning or cutting our losses and changing a car we've had for just under 2 weeks.

I would get the ride height checked when the car is unloaded and again unloaded, it could be that the springs are worn out, if so they could be changed under warranty.

I would also check the towball height and see if that is within limits.

Is there a Hyundai owners forum you could look at to see if this is a common problem?

Sorry I don't have any real answers but this might put you on the right track to find what the problem is.

According to other forums there have been some rear suspension faults on the Hyundai i30 which a clunking sound is heard plus a very harsh ride like the suspension is bouncing on a wooden plank. If the rear suspension is defective it could be the cause of the problem so I would suggest that you visit a Hyundai dealer and see if there have been any recalls related to this which if there are then you will get it rectified free of charge by Hyundai.

No that's great thank you. I'll look at a Hyundai forum that's a good idea. Having spoke again to the fitter we wonder if the bloke who fitted it has made a mistake!!

The actual ball hight is fine. We think the springs are ok but the fitter company are going to look into hight etc to see if that could be the issue. It's just such a stress.

Although Aussie, I found this link on a quick google search. From what I can see, the curve around the bumper is causing the issue. One which needs a bumper cut sits higher and doesn't ground. Link

What you can do with this information I don't know, but thought i'd post my findings.

Thanks for that, I think you are right about the bumper it needs to be set higher with a cut. I'm hopeful the towbar fitter will ge able to come up with a solution as I don't fancy changing the car after just 2 weeks as otherwise is perfect and tows brilliantly.

Have a look at this Towbar website. The link is for the Hyundai i30 so you will have to look to see which type of towball you then click on 'More Details' but each one of them states it requires a bumper cut.

Hi, may I suggest you get vehicle checked at Hyundai dealer and get confirmation and written evidence from them that vehicle is up to standard, then armed with this request refund from tow bar supplier/fitter as its not fit for purpose. then use a different tow bar manufacturer explain the problem you;ve had and ask for ground clearance measurement.
