Hi everyone - very nervous new caravanner off on our first holiday next week to Whitesands Bay St Davids Pembrokeshire. When driving we usually take the A494 then A487 but we thought when towing we would be better taking the A483 and then A40 through Haverfordwest then across to St Davids. Any advice on the best route please? I'm fine when driving along but sharp corners, passing parked cars etc really worries me and I can see OH getting out and directing me through any tiny villages such as Solva! do you get used to towing at some point? many thanks

Living in Mid Wales, I would suggest:

A483 to Newtown.
A489 to Caersws.
A470 to Builth.
A483 to Llandovery.
A40 to Haverfordwest.
A487 to St Davids.

The A498/470 after Newtown is flatter and easier than the A483.

I've towed all of it at sometime.

Funnily enough i've just come back from tent camping in st davids last week. Its lovely and white sands is great. The roads are a bit narrow especially around solva, but we did see a few campers and caravans and people slow down and let each other pass etc. We camped down a really narrow lane and I was nervous even taking my car down. But we saw a camper do it, and there were loads of vans on the site so they must have managed somehow. We've not picked our caravan up yet and I'm nervous about towing too, but somehow everyone managed. I reckon solva is the narrowest bit, just take it slow and people pull over if you need the space.

It is lovely isn't it, we've camped there a couple of times but have upgraded to a tourer and just panicking on the narrow lanes but you're right, if we just take our time people will hopefully move over and help us out!

LlaniDavis - we're going to take your route thank you and stop overnight half way. What is Builth Wells like to drive through please?

Mid way - There is a very nice site in Llanidloes; Dol Llys Farm. They are registered on here.

Builth isn't too bad. Go over the bridge and the road goes to the right after the building with the mural and through the town. A bit narrow but they drive 44 tonnes through.
If you want to miss it you can turn right just as you go into Newbridge on Wye and take the B road to Beulah. That is the way we normally go to the Swansea area. Bit hilly and narrowish in one spot, but easy enough.
