I'm looking to upgrade to a 4X4.
My local garage have suggested that the Hyundai Santa Fe tends to suffer from expensive turbo failure unless you can get hold of one that has had regular oil changes, which is a pity as this was my choice of motor.
So, has anyone had good, or bad experiences with the Tuscon ? I would be buying an older model, probably '07,'08 models around £6000.
All experiences welcome
Thanks in advance.
I knew someone who had a Hyundai Tucson but over a two year period suffered a bent engine valve on two occasions so the cylinder head had to be removed twice which was an expensive repair each time. If you look at the BHP of the Tucson it's not that good in comparison to other 4x4 vehicles depending on model.
See further specs in the link below.
Any diesel car can have a failed turbo if oil changes have been missed and/or cheap low spec oil used. Most important with used diesel is full service history of oil changes at correct mileage and grade of oil used indicated on receipts. Full main dealer service history should ensure this.
Too right, Billy X, I was in the trade many years ago and you are dead right.
I hadn't looked closely at the BHP of the Tuscon, tango55, thanks for bringing that up, perhaps I'll have another look at the X Trail !
Thanks for the input peeps.
I personally think the Nissan X-Trail would be a far better choice than the Hyundai Tucson but if you start a new thread asking about the X-Trail I'm sure you will get a better response as I would imagine that more people have toed with one in comparison to the Tucson.
Don't know if some of these older posts might be of use.
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
I bought a 2l diesel 4x4 Tucson in 2006 and sold it in 2010. It was a good car, it did its towing duties well. Totally reliable in that time. Don't know where Tango gets his information from but mine had about 150bhp and did in the high 30s mpg.
I swapped the tyres round every 10,000 miles and sold the car at over 40,000 miles with the original tyres on and an unused spare.
The leather seats looked a bit tired when I sold it, and the plastic trim scratched very easily.
Can I ask what the fascination about upgrading to a 4x4 or SUV seems to be?
A lot of large estate/hatchback cars are just as heavy but lot less to run.
I understand some maybe out of necessity if you have large 6 berth double axle etc but was away last month and I would say 90% of towing vehicles were 4x4 or SUV types with vans that didnt need them

That's where I got my information from plus I did some research myself about 3 years ago but I did actually state... "depending on which model".

Did you read the Op. He states he wants an 07,08 model. The diesel versions by this time had a turbo fitted and more power.

SUVs are a different body style.
As for fuel consumption, I get 50mpg on my 2.3 litre 4wd ASX4. Achieved 37mpg towing our last caravan to Italy. Name a few estates which would be a lot less to run.
Thanks everyone, I'm a bit more confused now ha ha !!
I guess it's all down to the individual vehicle and how it's been serviced etc, and having been put off the Santa Fe by my local garage I spoke to several people whilst at Salcombe this weekend and every single one of them heaped praise on the car, so...................
Thanks for the X-trail info blueexpo97 , very interesting.
