Hi GCMS
Thanks for your comments which do resonate. My previous Shogun, the 2.8 LWB model died the death of a thousand rust holes. Repeated mot failures due to corroded brake pipes, corroded power steering pipes, but in the end it was the rust that destroyed the body to chassis mounts that caused me to say goodbye. Having said that, I got 228,000 miles with not one mechanical failure, but I did change the oil every 10,000 miles and had it serviced on time every time. With regard to replacing the current Shogun, I have included on the must test drive list the Disco 4, BMW X5 and for sure the Land Cruiser.

Car like, big towing capacity, fits 4 or 5 people, and has a BIG practical boot.
Mate has one, says no more loading then unloading the van on site. EVERYTHING goes in the truck, so if / when you stop off en route somewhere, you can stretch out in the van if you want without clambering over stuff.
"Best 4x4 to tow 1500kg" is a pretty wide statement. Cars are a very personal thing anyway. Some people swear by land rovers. Some swear by Skodas etc. For Skoda read also Volkswagen Audi seat. The Scout seems a bit light to me.
Without knowing more about your driving experience we cannot really get beyond our personal preferences. Do you expect to tow in difficult offroad or mountainous terrain, do you have long motorway solo journeys to do? Is the car also used as a shopping trolly?
You seem to have already made up your mind on 4x4. That will exclude many capable towcars in any but ardous conditions.
At the end of the deliberations we all buy the car that we like. Not the best recommendation. Bit like choosing a partner really.
Your right there and i think we now have to refer to the 4x4 in a differant way.The LR, Land Cruisers, Shougun are heavy duty 4x4 where you Hyundi etc are light duty which like many cars are great tow cars.
Thats be honest here my discovery 3 is over kill at 56% towing a 1500kg caravan and many more in its class are the same. But i have had a LR in one form or another for the last 30+ years glutton for punishment i guess
Been doing some long journeys recently, and its easy to spot the unstable caravans on the road. It does seem there is little relation between size of car compared to caravan and caravan stability.
In the last week I've seen 2 car/caravan combinations being recovered. A Range Rover and a Volvo V40.
