Hi
New to caravan inn and looking to purchase our first 2nd hand van. We currently have a 57plate Cmax and have seen a van - Abbey 416 GTS 5 but having had a read it doesn't look like the Cmax is legal to tow the abbey as the max laden is 1300kg but the abbey fully laden is more - can anyone advise what vehicle is ok to tow such a van as will have to purchase a new 2nd hand vehicle as this rate :)
Thanks
You need to know the max laden weight (MPTLM) of the caravan and work from that. You also need to check your licence to see what you are permitted to tow.
There are lots of cars that might be suitable but without knowing the caravan weight and licence situation it's hard to give any proper advice.
Thanks for your replies, it's says fully laden is 1433kg.
I will check our licenses before purchasing. I just can't find a car that tows this max laden?
Quite a lot will tow that especially if you go for a diesel model. Many Mondeos, S Max, Galaxy, most 4x4 are just a few that come to mind, it really depends on what sort of car you need for day to day journeys.

Do you know the licence conditions? The problem only occurs if your licence is dated after 01/01/1997 in which case for that caravan the plated max gross weight can not be any more than 2067kg.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
