Hello,
My trusty 1999 Ford Focus 1.8 tddi estate, which has been my only tow car, gave up the fight for life in Poole last Monday, when the injector pump gave up.
Thank you to the kind 2 men who pushed me out of the traffic !
Anyway, time to track down a new ( I wish !) car with my budget of £1700.
I have been wondering about a Skoda Fabia 1.9 tdi estate. It is slightly smaller than my focus and weighs 31kg less, but has 11 more horses under the bonnet.
My van is a 1990 Cotswold windrush which is 800kg unladen with a max laden 1000kg.
Just wondered if anyone out there has used a Fabia as a tow car and could help me decide.
                                 Regards, Mark.

Seen a few towing light caravans, so shouldn't be a problem.

Check the maximum towing weight - my wife has a newer 1.2 TSI and that's limited to 750Kg. I'd expect it to be higher on the diesel but you never know.

Thank you for all replies,
I have looked and yes it says 750kg . The 85% guide has it at over 1000kg, but I imagine in the case of an accident, it would be the manufacturers limit that would be taken into account.
Yes, I have, and still am considering an Octavia, which I know would be an all round better car for the job. Just thought if the Fabia was up to the towing, then it would be fine for the rest of my motoring needs and save me money on running costs.
              Thanks again, Mark.

Maximum braked tow weight of 750kg seems quite low for a 1.9 diesel car. What I'd the minimum kerbside weight of the fadia 1.9.

I would think real life running cost would differ very much between the 2.

Mark,
Where did you get those figures from?
This shows the Combi has an allowed towing weight of 1000kg.

At the bottom of the driver's side B post is a plate with all the correct weights on.

http://www.practicalcaravan.com/reviews/tow-car/28233-skoda-fabia-estate-19-tdi-105-3

Kerbweight 1265 kg
85% KW 1075 kg
Towball limit 50 kg
Maximum towing limit 1200 kg

So as long as you keep the nose weight to 50 or below you will be ok

I have the roomster 1.9 tdi which is based on the Fabia (more or less) the 1.9 is a great engine and good on fuel, but I have only towed trailers with mine, and I am aware that it has quite a low noseweight.
