Been looking at new tow car for sometime now to replace my trusty mondeo (not keen on the new one) and have narrowed it down to either Vauxhall Insignia or Peugeot 3008.

Insignia is manual, 3008 automatic. Now I have never had an automatic as a tow car so what are they like is there a huge difference in performance/power etc both cars are 2ltr turbo diesels.

As far as I can remember the max nose weight of the 3008 is only 70kg, this may influence your decision.

Auto diesels are great for towing, I'd have an auto diesel Insignia rather than the Peugeot, I didn't find the 3008 very comfortable.

Auto here too.

But get a 'proper one'. Not one of these auto boxes that still have a 'clutch' but class them as an auto...

Rob, been quoted the nose weight is 80kg on the 2ltr so happy with that really.

I prefer the Insignia but Mrs likes the 3008 so just a decision on the gear box really for me.

Both really nice and was surprised by the 3008 as its really nice.

The current model brochure shows the noseweight as 70kg. We once had a car with a max noseweight of 90kg but the towbar had a max of 80, we didn't know this until the bar had been fitted and luckily the caravan towed well at around 75kg.

I've just realised that they don't list an auto now so I presume you are looking at the old model. It was the old model that we tried and I'm sure that the nose weight was low on it that's why I checked the brochure on the website. Unfortunately I don't have the old brochure now so I can't double check the figures, it's worth double checking though before you spend any money just in case the salesman made a mistake.

I always said my next car would be an auto,Ive heard they are brilliant especially when being used for towing but guess what I seen a car I liked and it was a manual. Ach well theres always next time.

I'd go insignia too but definitely an auto. I would never ever buy a manual gearbox car again.

Insignia will be nothing but trouble, when they first came out many got them for taxi use, they all went back after an 8 month period, far to many faults on them.
A DSG box isn't that bad, you can use it in full auto or use the stick like a manual, but without the clutch.
As for the Peugeot, its French and could be what you call a Friday car, or any day of the week due to poor build quality
Go to a Skoda dealer and test drive a superb with DSG box you will be surprised, don't worry you don't have to buy one , but more than likely you just might consider it

I know someone who tows with an insignia and has never had any problems with it in the 4 years he's had it. You'll probably find that if your buying new or newish that any troubles that the car may of had when 1st launched will all be sorted out by now as it's been about for a while now.

Once you have used a modern auto you wont go back to a manual.
if you do look at the Scoda as suggested by Bob look at the 2.ltr 170 auto.

Not looking anymore to many choices, just wished I liked the new mondeo as that would always be my first choice (Mrs has her say to though never drives it).

It's now between the Insignia and the Peugeot, autos in general seem to be popular but the lows noseweight might affect that decision.

Insignia is a lovely car and whilst you hear bad reviews you get that about most cars after all FORD is fix or repair daily isn't lol but never had one bit trouble with mine.

I would go for an auto for towing, had two, both DSG type, a C4 Grand Picasso and now a Seat Alhambra. The Citroen was not that smooth, drove ok with the paddles when not towing, but the auto was not smooth solo, preferred it in auto for towing but was still not over smooth even though we were towing a Folding Camper, not a 'van. Moving off was not smooth, could be jumpy (like when a thrust bearing is going). However the Alhambra DSG box (VW like the Skoda) is fantastic, it is smooth solo or towing.
So as Peaugeot and Citroen come from the same stable as each other, I would avoid, but Seat / VW / Skoda DSG box I would recomend. Sorry my only experience of Vauxhall was a hire car for a week about 10 years ago, which broke down, and a Chevette which I hated, so cant advise on the insignia.
