We have a 61 plate Seat Alhambra. It tows our Adria nicely. It is comfortable for a long journey. More than happy with it. Don't forget, you are basically getting a VW!

Thanks folks. It gets decent reviews but hubby not convinced. He wants to stick to the Passat or Mondeo. Our current Passat has been in garage 3 times this year so time to seriously consider getting rid!

Seats are mostly identical parts to VW and Skoda as well as Audi so any problems might be common to all those makes. So either stick with any of those you like or buy a completely different make.

What was it in the garage for, on all 3 occasions

The most economical car will always be the one you have already got. Your existing car has been in 3 times this year. Doesn't seem too bad.
If you change it you have fixed your old car 3 times for someone else. Maybe the replacement will be in 4 times next year.
Passats will do mega mileage if properly serviced. 250k plus. so will a Seat because it's all VAG.

Our current Passat is 8+ years old. Last year the electronic handbrake system broke down twice, needed towed to a garage and cost me about £400 each time. A month ago I was over 800 on various things and on Friday it was back in with another fault on handbrake. They fixed the last one free. When an old car starts costing this amount yearly its time to go I think. I also need the car for my job. The current one is now too unreliable and I'm fed up with it.

We had an 8 yr old auto AC Passat, then when I retired we sold it in favour of just running the wife's little 206.
Biggest mistake we ever made. That Peugeot was a right load of steaming dung. Once the ECU went, it was never right. When Skoda offered us £800 for it we snatched their hand off, and literally had no idea whether it would get us to the dealer.
Never had a Seat but I like VAG and would echo what's been said. There's some commonality between them all these days and you've got to hope for the best irrespective but otherwise go for another make.
Good luck.

Bit the bullet and will be picking up a new Seat Leon Estate FR in a fortnight. Liked the VW Passat but hated the electronic handbrake and all the hassles that came with it. The Seat Leon is back to a traditional handbrake, otherwise VW under a different name. Time will tell but I feel we've made a good choice.
