Hi can anyone suggest a good tow car we have a 2004 compass rallye 482 2 birth
It weighs 1200 unladen and 1385 laden
Only want to spend around 2000 pounds
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

You will get a diesel Mondeo for that price that will tow it no probs but you will have to hope the car is in good mechanical state. Or might be better to go for diesel Ford Galaxy or Seat or VW versions, all 3 have 1.9 VW diesel which might be better proposition than Ford but ensure cambelt has been changed.

Thanks I have heard that they can be trouble what is your opinion on 1.9 dci renault laguna

Everybody will shout stay away from Renault but fact is for £2k its the car not the make, a Renault devalues more so a £2k Laguna with low miles and service history could well be better than a £2k mega miles Mondy with no history. However 100k odd miles car with service history of new clutches, cambelts etc may well be worth considering.

passat or mondeo would be top of my list. if you prefer a french car the 406.

All cars can be trouble, but I I drive my 55 plate Mondeo for 6 years and replaced nothing, all I did was have it serviced. I bought my present car on a 12 plate two years ago and it has no issues whatsoever, but at three years old I would not expect any.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

It's wishful thinking to think that one car at £2k is better than another car at £2k.  Cars devalue at different rates for valid reasons and the main reason is cost of running the car - maintenance and fuel - as well as future resale value.

Ive had several diesel Mondeo's in your price range, all bought with over 140,000 miles and takes to 170,000 miles + with nothing more than basic servicing and minor repairs.

Where the Mondeo wins over the Renault is the price and availability of parts.

You may hear the about the dreadful injector issues, but some of those are simply a lack of fuel filter changes and then consider the number of cars sold that have no issues.
