I am just back from camping France and Germany this year and noticed a lot of people towing trailers with only the usual tarpaulin covering the trailer. I'm looking to see if anyone has towed on the continent before and how secure/safe the trailer would be. We usually have a stop or two in France en route to our campsite in Germany using a local IBIS hotel. My fear is someone breaking into the trailer and taking our valuables. Not that it would be hard to get into if it's just a tarpaulin. Any advice would be very grateful. I know it's a long way to next year but we do like to plan well ahead.

No definitive answer to your question really. Many budget hotels have carpark gates that are closed at night & many are at industrial areas nr motorway away from built up areas so stick to these perhaps? This sort of casual petty thieving requires easy access so use hotels where thieves are least likely to be.

The safest thing is not to leave anything of real value in your trailer whilst you are away from it, either take them with you, or hide them out of sight in your car. Just use the trailer for cheap bulky items like bedding and table/chairs, cheap bbq ect, lock away your tent in the car's boot, along with any electrical appliances, tv, or anything that the theif may be able to sell on for a quick proffit.

We used to sometimes stop off overnight at a Travelodge on the way to cornwall when we used to be tent campers, and even though our trailer had a lockable lid, we always packed it as above, as well as carrying a very heavy duty padlock and chain, which we threaded through one of the trailer wheels and the back wheel of the car for extra security to just using the hitchlock alone.
