My Sportage is two years old this month and has 20000 miles.
Last month, in France , we noticed that twice when we pulled up at the site the engine was really "clattery". Turned the ignition off for a minute, then restarted and it was quiet again. Mentioned this when I took car in for service a few days ago., local Kia dealership has ordered a replacement short motor and cylinder head.No quibble, no questions about how I was driving/ towing weights etc.
Is this excellent service, under warranty, or just what any other manufacturer would have done?
I have a very nice, new, top of the range Kia Ceed, as a loan car.

They are good, our 3 year old Sorento is having a new set of alloy wheels next week, under warranty due to small amount of corrosion!
I expected them to be repainted rather than replaced, but no complaints at all!

We have just had our 14 Plate Sorento returned after been in the garage for 2 weeks with a failed power steering motor. Excellent service from the dealership and even loaned us a new Kx4 model as w courtesy car to use on a long weekend break. Excellent service.

We have had a Sorrento and now a Santa Fe both Kia and Hyudai being sister companies are excellent for service and warranty work.

Mechanics are used to doing mostly services these days not major repairs. From what you say they are getting a short engine & cylinder head separately & putting it together in their workshop? Like I said, you are not being angry enough about this, a failed engine at 20k miles is outrageous & it sounds as if they are trying to fob you off with reconditioned bits. I would be wanting a brand new engine complete in a box & I would want to see it first. If they won't put a brand new factory fresh engine in then once car is running right I'd trade in asap.

My dad is now on his third Kia (mobility) with no problems whatsoever with the cars or the dealers.

I had a Nissan Primera, bought new in 2001, which had an engine sensor go within a few months (Nissan did a recall shortly after) then the engine itself needed a complete rebuild (off the road for 8 weeks) with a lot less than 20,000 miles on the clock.

I am pleased it was all done under warranty but despite lots of protests all Nissan was prepared to do was offer a free service. It was the last time I bought Nissan.

Went from there back to Suzuki and bought a Grand Vitara XL7 and put it in for a check up just before the warrant was due run out (3 years then). The dealer went through everything with a fine tooth comb changing one or two things under the warranty even changing the radio aerial as they said the reception was not quite up to standard.

It is why I have now owned 3 Suzukis and only one Nissan, the Suzuki dealer was a locally owned dealer and the Nissan one was a big national.

If the op's garage is ordering a short engine & cylinder head separately, it suggests these parts are recon units not unused factory fresh. He needs to ensure all parts fitted are brand new not reconditioned. Recon can mean anything, 'recon' far east engines are sometimes cleaned up secondhand units. He could end up with an engine older than his car.

'Factory recon units' as supplied by main dealer will be rebuilt by a separate company, generally these engines do not last as long as new ones. He needs to push for a brand new engine complete with all parts including turbo.

Kia have told me that big end bearing was starting to break up, luckily caught it early.
Service manager assures me that all parts ordered are brand new, and not re conditioned.

I would get fairly well involved in this. You need to find out exactly what is being done. It does seem odd that engine & head are coming separately if that is what is actually happening. I would have thought a complete factory fresh engine should be supplied complete with all parts including turbo. If big end bearings were breaking up this would result in metal particles in engine which might effect turbo bearing so new turbo should be fitted as well.

...probably ask for a new entertainment unit and a new set of tyres while you are at it, and maybe a picnic set to go in the boot.

Freeatlast, it is Jennings Stockton . Have not been impressed with Petch at Darlo, couple of years ago they charged me for work on my previous car that should have been warranty, I had to make a complaint and got a refund.
He said new pistons and crankshaft too.
Thats just about a replacement engine isnt it ?

That's why I asked. I was not impressed with them either. Wondered if they'd improved recently.

If they are putting in new crankshaft & pistons it sounds like they are rebuilding your existing engine. Unless you are prepared to push for a new complete engine that arrives crated up from the factory then you will just have to trust the engine building skills of your garage mechanic. As it stands the engine will contain metal particles from the broken bearing shells & these might have found their way into oilways & so on, all this will need cleaning out. It's a skilled job.

Or if as you say they are ordering in a short engine then this will still be a rebuild, even if pistons & crank are new. I would insist on a new turbo being fitted whatever else they do. If car was driven with bearings breaking up, the swarf in the engine could have partly blocked oil feed to turbo & damaged bearing.

Isnt there a magnet in the sump to catch bits of steel to stop them reaching the oilways etc.
