Hi I am an experienced tow driver and have decided on a vw caravelle which will be the main car and tow car.
I am very keen to hear from anyone re towing a large ie 650 6 caravan twin axle.
I know on paper the numbers add up but it's 26k so I'm desperate to get feedback re that engine and experiences others might have.
It is nthanks if you can offer feedback insights!

Have you thought about an Hyundai i800. Very similar vehicle weight wise. 8 seats,inc driver and same size boot. Cheaper to buy than a vw and with a five year warranty. Maybe doesn't hold the value like a vw but with lower buying cost and interest charges its all relevant. I sold mine a couple of months ago because I was using that has a family car and also running a 4x4. I compromised and bought a Chevrolet Captiva . 7 seats and 4x4. I had the Hyundai for three years I covered 25,000 miles and it was faultless.

thanks but as I indicated I am interested in the vw, I currently own the Hyundai and to be fair it has been absolutely appalling (plus road tax stupidly high).

if anyone has info re their actual towing with a 140 caravelle I really would love to hear from you! all the previous threads are related to the older 2.5.

we have the chance (but only for 24hrs) to get 9000 off a new one and I don't want to rush in an make a mistake.

hi. i had a 24 hr demonstrator vw transporter kombi 140bhp earlier this year to try out with my 1800 kgs adria.i am very experienced at towing and found the transporter very unstable.got it up to 60mph on motorway and had to slow down as it went into a serious wobble. was gutted as i am a vw fan. had a look at a hyundia i800,bought it,removed rear seats to fit in a dog cage. its a fantastic tow car.170 bhp,2400 kgs curb weight £225 road tax. no issues with reliability yet

Thanks for that. The decision re the 140 taken now. We have an I 800 but it's been a shocker. Having said that not met anyone else with the same huge list of grief mines one of the older engined much higher group . Off to hyundai then for a nose.

You were right. Things have moved on. I have also read the road test on this site and it looks like I will need to shine my old knackered one up and trade for new. I have just reserved a car online.

when i was looking for a vw i found that many where over priced and over rated. had my hyundia 6 months now,is a 61 plate manual.had exceeded what i had expected.

If you are trading your i800 in then try a Hyundai dealer. I got £9,000 part ex for mine . It was five years old on a 10 plate , 55,000 miles and in really good condition. I liked the car but wanted a change . I also didn't like the way the back seat didn't fold so was a bit of a pain at times. I also think that the vw's are overpriced really..good luck.

I just got a 2011 Hyundai iload a few weeks ago and really pleased with it. got the van cos I don't need all the seats and can carry stock in it.
Had our first tug 2 weeks ago and it towed our (small) caravan about 750 miles Inverness and back effortlessly.
You also get the raised driving position which is also a good thing. All the kit goes in the van, you can use the caravans facilities on route without having to climb over awnings and aqua rolls etc and you take what ever you want with you. They even look good .. well in my eyes anyway.

sadly i've been for a drive- the auto wont tow more than 1500kg and the manual has only 136bhp so now Im back to the vw looking at the 140 or the 180 engine.

anyone towing with these please drop me in line.

don't know where you get the 1500kgs max for the auto.it was the higher road tax that put me off the auto.£485. my 5 speed manual has 168 bhp,same engine that is in the older kia sorento if you still looking at the vw go for the 140 as the 180 blows turbos and very costly to replace.
