Hi, I wanted to ask for a bit of advice about hot tyres and increased tyre pressures. To many of you this might seem an obvious question, but it bothered me this year in France, so I thought I’d ask.

I’ve got a Bailey with the TyrePal monitoring sensors fitted into the tyres. The cold pressure of the tyres should be 60psi. I also have monitors fitted to my car, a Hyundai Santa Fe.

The monitor allows you to set your maximum and minimum tyre pressures and tyre temperatures. It then sounds an alarm when those settings are exceeded. I set up the monitor and all was fine. I checked the monitor against two different types of tyre pressure gauge and it was very accurate. Excellent, I thought. Off to France.

Within an hour of leaving Calais, the temperature rose and the sun came out. Ten minutes later, the alarms sounded as the tyre pressure exceeded 65psi. The tyre temperature had also risen. We travelled around quite a lot & over the fortnight, the pressure peaked at 71psi, with morning cold pressure was always 59-60psi. Tyre temperatures reached 42 deg. All the time, my car tyres didn’t change much at all.

My question is, is it normal to see an increase of 10/12 psi (about 20%) as the tyres warm up?   Also, is a tyre still OK at 40deg? If not, has anyone any suggestions for what to do?

Yes its normal. Tyre pressures should be set cold at ambient temp & not in direct sunlight. If you set your pressures cold in UK at say 18deg ambient(ie shade temp) & then drive to southern France & check them cold at say 28deg ambient you will need to decrease pressures to bring back to correct pressure.

I always check my pressures early morning wherever I am & adjust to specified cold pressures as necessary. You can't really do any more than that. I don't have sensors on mine though, I just check once a week or so when away in France & always a couple of days before leaving campsite in case of slow puncture giving me time to get it fixed.

i used a lazer temp gauge to check tyre temp after i do a cold pressure check before we leave site then every few hours walk round van and check with temp gauge. usually mid 40 degs in france and spain.

Just a tip.
When staying on a campsite for more than 24hours in high temperatures I always put covers on the tyres on both the caravan and car to keep the temperature down during the daytime.

I find that tyre pressures on my motorhome increase by 10/12% whilst travelling. I think TyrePal suggest setting the upper limit at about 15% if I recall correctly but its in the instructions.

What is the max PSI rating of your tyres?

Fill them with nitrogen?

had a truck come into the garage having just had 2 front tyres fitted,driver complaining about steering.checked tyre pressures and found the 2 new tyres pressures at 195 psi. max pressure stamped on tyre was125 psi.as tyres was still cold just dropped pressures to 120 psi and sent him on his way no problems.
