It there was a straightforward answer to this everyone would be driving the same towcar. First you need to get an idea of the weight of the sort of caravan you are after. Go and have a look at a whole load of caravans and grab as many brochures as you can. Then you will soon have an idea of the towing weight.
The car? There's so much in this its difficult to know where to start. Some will simply say go for this or go for that, but there's far more to it than that. Cost, features, fuel consumption, car safety, looks, 2wd or 4wd, petrol or diesel etc etc. If any single car was the best, then that's all there would be on the road.
Another consideration is how far you intend to go with the caravan. If its just going to be a journey to the campsite 10 miles down the road every month then the towcar feature is less important. If however you are contemplating going abroad for weeks at a time, then the towcar becomes more important.
2wd or 4wd, again depends on the above, and whether you are going to be fair weather campers or go all year round.
4wd isn't necessarily overkill, they are not always that much more expensive, but command a better trade in price.
The only thing I would say, if you expect to travel a fair distance towing each year then a decent powered car is essential. For a 4 berth, I would suggest at least 130bhp and preferably diesel. However, the latter depends on the rest of your yearly driving. Diesels don't like a lot of short runs.

At that mileage it wont even be run in, should return 45 plus in normal driving, 30 plus when towing.
A local taxi owner had one 600,000 miles on it, until it got side swiped as he passed a junction.
The only thing he had to do was carry loads of bulbs with him, due to virtually every light coming on when started, dealer told him to remove the daylight running fuse, so that you have to turn the light switch to put them on, never hardly changed a bulb after that
Unbraked Towing Weight
500 kg
Braked Towing Weight
1600 kg
nose weight 75kg
So that leaves you a fair lot of vans to choose from, all vans have a plate near the door with the miro and max weight on them, so check that the max is below the max 1600kg first then check out the van, buy from a dealer for extra security, they will rectify any problems for you
