Right guys my heads ready to fall off 😾😾😾 We are looking for a new car for towing a caravan which we will be having ready for next year. We're new to the caravan game so looking for an average size 4 berth. I'm struggling to get my head round towing weights etc and cannot for the life of me decide what car to go for.... Do we go for 4x4 or is that a bit overkill? What family car would be adequate and safe to tow an average size 4 berth van whilst sticking to the safe 85% rule. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm just going round in circles and honestly don't know which would be the best way to go.

Perhaps some idea of family size/age and a budget might help people and any make you might have a 'downer' on?
For what it;s worth I've been towing since 1980 and have never found the need for a 4x4, but the heaviest van we have had has been MPTW 1500kg.
A four berth van can vary a lot in weight, we're looking to change at the moment and the weights on our short list vary from 1250kg right up to around 1750 kg, though we're unlikely to go over the 1500kg mark.

It there was a straightforward answer to this everyone would be driving the same towcar. First you need to get an idea of the weight of the sort of caravan you are after. Go and have a look at a whole load of caravans and grab as many brochures as you can. Then you will soon have an idea of the towing weight.

The car? There's so much in this its difficult to know where to start. Some will simply say go for this or go for that, but there's far more to it than that. Cost, features, fuel consumption, car safety, looks, 2wd or 4wd, petrol or diesel etc etc. If any single car was the best, then that's all there would be on the road.

Another consideration is how far you intend to go with the caravan. If its just going to be a journey to the campsite 10 miles down the road every month then the towcar feature is less important. If however you are contemplating going abroad for weeks at a time, then the towcar becomes more important.

2wd or 4wd, again depends on the above, and whether you are going to be fair weather campers or go all year round.

4wd isn't necessarily overkill, they are not always that much more expensive, but command a better trade in price.

The only thing I would say, if you expect to travel a fair distance towing each year then a decent powered car is essential. For a 4 berth, I would suggest at least 130bhp and preferably diesel. However, the latter depends on the rest of your yearly driving. Diesels don't like a lot of short runs.

Average size van - then go for a Nissan X-Trail. They are a good all round car.

An alternative would be a Kia Sorrento - but I prefer the X-Trails.

Understand all your points and views very clearly. I've got a budget of £5-6000 for a new car. Sounds strange but only want to spend around £2000 on the first caravan for obvious reasons, but the car will be our everyday car as well. I think the trouble is I speak to different people who give me different answers which to them are all the right answers, but to me just makes it all the more confusing. I'm thinking of a caravan fully loaded of around 1250-1300 kg?? I'm looking on various sites at all these cars and look at the minimum kerb weights and try to work out what would be relevant. This is what's confusing me as I automatically think I need something massive to tow the caravans. If I looked at something with a minimum kerb weight of 1500kg or around that figure, is this something that will give me a lot of choice in vans, or restrict me somewhat. Does this make sense??? I'm ready to tear what's left of my hair out !!!!!!

I think most will say 2litre diesel Mondeo. Plenty of choice it your price range so why look elsewhere if you have no idea where else to look?

Skoda Boab will of course say 2litre diesel Skoda Octavia which in fact would be an equally good choice.

Any of the 2 above or if you go for 4x4 you would get a good Hyundai Tucson for your budget.

The mondeo or insignia will give you a greater choice of caravans due to having a higher kerbweight

Yes great tow car and just remember you dont need a full blown 4x4 to get a good match of tow car and van.

Talking to my father in law today, who tows his caravans with volvo's, always has done. He has a stunning 2000 v70 estate which he's owned since new, so I know how much he's looked after it. Anyhow, he's offered it to me today for £900, with tow bar and twin electrics already fitted. It's done 113000 with full local garage service history. I think it's the 2.5 engine, had a go of it today, and can't believe how nice it drives. Seriously considering it to use as second car purely for towing and keeping my megane, which I don't really want to grey rid of anyway, and spend more money on the caravan instead 😈 Does anyone know the weights for towing with this model Volvo as the father in law tows 100% as he's got the experience behind him. What's people's thoughts and views on this model Volvo?

Buy it, they tow wonderfully well. Somebody will tell you what they weigh but it would help if we knew whether it was diesel or petrol. What I do know is that the petrol 2.5 engine is lovely to drive but it has a petrol habit that it loves to feed.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

At that mileage it wont even be run in, should return 45 plus in normal driving, 30 plus when towing.
A local taxi owner had one 600,000 miles on it, until it got side swiped as he passed a junction.
The only thing he had to do was carry loads of bulbs with him, due to virtually every light coming on when started, dealer told him to remove the daylight running fuse, so that you have to turn the light switch to put them on, never hardly changed a bulb after that

Unbraked Towing Weight

500 kg

Braked Towing Weight

1600 kg

nose weight 75kg

So that leaves you a fair lot of vans to choose from, all vans have a plate near the door with the miro and max weight on them, so check that the max is below the max 1600kg first then check out the van, buy from a dealer for extra security, they will rectify any problems for you

Buy it, at that price it is a steal and will tow the vast majority of single axle caravans. Really well.
