Hi all, we are purchasing a Range Rover evoque prestige and have asked the dealer to fit a Land Rover detachable tow bar.

We have since read that some tow bars and not compataible with the alko hitchlock.

We have ordered a swift conqueror 2016 model.

Can anyone tell us if they have been in this situation and if the tow bar is or is not compataible with the alko.

Thank you for your help :)

Towbar will be swan neck type so it will be compatable with Al-ko stabiliser hitch.

Just so you know... Only hitch that is not compatable is standard flange ball as front of hitch can can catch & be damaged at extreme articulation. If you have flange type towbar then you need a flange ball with longer & deeper neck for clearance.

Detatchable swan neck should be ok. You need minimum 60mm between centre of ball & rear of bumper. I would have thought it would be more than that.

Not quite, correct ball wrong reason. The almost ball has a slightly taller neck that is undercut slightly just under the ball to allow for the wider also hitch to articulate without catching.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

In simple language a slightly taller neck that is undercut slightly is a longer & deeper neck to allow clearance for the Al-ko stabiliser hitch.

The Alko ball is the same distance from the flange as the standard ball, the neck is higher and where the neck reaches the ball it has a narrower section to enable the large also hitch to articulate without touching the stem . If this is not fitted the casting on the hitch is likely to come into contact with the stem and being a soft casting it splits and destroys the hitch.

Hi Janus. I think your computer is getting the better of you. Both your posts have some errant words in them!
To answer the original question, a Land Rover detachable tow ball is perfectly compatible with an Al-Ko hitch.

You are worrying unnecessarily, as stated, if you have flange type towbar fitted then you need an Al-ko compatable ball as indicated. Your towbar is not this, it is a swan neck towbar, that will be compatable, there is no reason it should not be.

As pointed out though, to set your mind at rest measure distance between centre of ball & rear of bumper. That distance should easily exceed 60mm so it will be ok.

Here you can see the differance in the tow balls.
As Janus stated.

most detachable tow balls fitted to land rover fits the bill to tow a alko hitch.

Ask dealer if this is the case, my land rover as a fix towbar fitted as i do not like detachable ones.

Or should i you stress that the bar they are selling you is alko ready?? because its not going to be cheap from them
