Just brought a new car today which we pick up on Saturday. On the car the tow bar frame is there and there is a small square bracket in the middle where the tow bar sits. The previous owner has decided not to leave it with the vehicle so not sure how to go about it and how I match it to a relevant towbar manufacturer. Can I buy the tow hitch bit for the frame?????

It's a Volvo v50 2009 R Design.

If it's a flange type & only towball is missing then it's simple job to bolt on a towball which is a standard item. You might as well get the longer & deeper Al-ko stabiliser compatable type. What about the electric socket(s)? They will be on a plate that goes between towball & flange.

If you mean it's a detachable swan neck type then look underneath, there should be a maker's label on towbar with serial number to allow you to match up if part is still available.

Sorry yeh the tow ball bit. Just want a standard type on not the swan neck. Don't think it's got electrics with it so will have to sort that out. Where do I start looking for the missing bit??

Any caravan/trailer shop/towbar fitter should stock them - either of the two on the left of this page, the upper (Alko compatible) type as Opensauce suggests if you're going to be towing anything with an Alko stabilser.

Yeh that's what I'm after, but what else would I need though cause when you look at the back of the car, all you can see is a small square that looks like something needs attaching before the towball???

Andy, for peace of mind, why not get a tow-bar fitter to have a look at it and carry out whatever work is needed, or at least tell you what is required?

If its not a flange with 2 bolt holes then it sounds like receiver for detachable swan neck. You either have to get correct part or you need a whole new towbar. As for electrics, its possible socket has been removed & wiring is still there. If you can't sort it out yourself then probably you need to take it to towbar fitters & they will have to do whatever is necessary up to fitting complete new towbar & electrics.

Everyone is just surmising what you have or have not, one needs to visit your local towbar fitter.

XVI yes?

As well is two words!

As it is an important consideration for you it's something I would have clarified before buying the car.  I think most folk would steer clear of buying a car with a tow bar if they don't know the history so conversation with previous owner should have been done before parting with money and then you would have discovered why towball was missing.

If it looks something like this:

then it's easy, just buy the ball. Even Halfords sell them.

However, if it's more like this:

or this:

then you'll need to talk to previous owner. As it's the removable type, you might just find it's in the boot somewhere, tucked under the mat with the jack perhaps.

If still no joy, and if you can find out which make, removable bits crop up on Ebay every so often.

Have a look for the wiring socket under the rear bumper .on my v50
The socket swivels up when not in use.

Aah, good point. Did think it was a bit strange for the Towbar to be there with no electrics.
