Hi, any techies out there? got a vw pssat 2004 1.9tdi 130, recently had a new cat fitted and a reconned turbo, and i seem to be getting a lot of black smoke, more so when accelerating and turbo kicks in,its a bit embarrasing, tried running some injector cleaner through, but no different. got 200,000 on clock but engines got plenty of power, it does seem worse after i had the recon turbo fitted

I ask this because if your last one went 'in style' as I call it, it may have sent (dumped) oil through the rest of the system (pipes etc) and the excess smoke could be just the new turbo sucking the gunk through and burning it off...
You may have oil in the intercooler too, and you may need that cleaning out too....

origanal turbo was whistliing and over boosting according to midland turbo's at Bulwell

What went wrong with the last one??

thanks for your replies, had new turbo fitted as other one was whistleing very loud and was told by Midland turbo's of Bulwell nottingham, that it was over boosting, had a local garage fit me a reconditioned one from midand turbo and seems to smoke more now,it s3eems very powerfull and only smokes when under load and the turbo kicks in, but its embarrassing to drive it and feel like i am lookig at the rear view mirror all the time, and driving like a nun

was that a split vacuum pipe
It was the pipe between EGR and intercooler, common problem on a mk 3 Mondeo
Thanks jonnyboy, sorry to ask but you say the induction side, is that pipes between the air filter and the turbo, the pipes that are not under pressure

On the Mondeo it was the pipe after the intercooler (under pressure)

We had a Vauxhall Vivaro van in with a blown turbo, the oil seals had gone and in spite of cleaning out the intercooler and inlet manifold it took ages for the smoke to clear.
Another vehicle we had in was an Alfa Romeo 147 that came in with a complaint that it was whistling, in that case it had a blown turbo that turned out to be a symptom of another fault that turned out to be a split hose, causing the turbo to fail.
Moral of the story? Was the turbo failure a cause or a symptom?
