Black smoke from a diesel is a fuelling issue.

If it was an oil issue the smoke would be blue.

Like others have suggested check Fuel Filter, EGR, Split pipes from the Turbo to EGR/Inlet Manifold. Check the EGR to make sure it was cleaned. If it's non of these you may have injector issues.

Good question mattlad, i have booked it in to the garage were

We had a Vauxhall Vivaro van in with a blown turbo, the oil seals had gone and in spite of cleaning out the intercooler and inlet manifold it took ages for the smoke to clear.

Another vehicle we had in was an Alfa Romeo 147 that came in with a complaint that it was whistling, in that case it had a blown turbo that turned out to be a symptom of another fault that turned out to be a split hose, causing the turbo to fail.

Moral of the story? Was the turbo failure a cause or a symptom?

Good question mattladd, i have booked it in to the garage that fitted the turbo and leaving it with them for a week while i am on holiday, so we wil see what they find

You've had some great advice here. Just remember, white smoke - water. Blue smoke - oil. Black smoke fuel. A general rule but pretty accurate.

I had a Audi also thought turbo problems, first was told it was turbo to which I didn't think was as Audi just replace with new. Then cleaned the egr to no effect, then after doing loads of reading up I spotted someone mention the mass air flow sensor. So I replaced with a new one and well I never was like a new car. I'm not saying it your problem but theses must be kept clean, as if not they will upset the entire car.
Yet speaking to loads of mechanic all they said it was either my turbo had gone or the egr valve. The Cheapest thing I replaced was the sensor. Now I regularly clean it with special spray. It's amazing one little sensor can make your car feel like it's had it.

Well folks, just got back off holiday and left the car with the garage that fitted the turbo, and picked it up yesterday, seems like it was a cheap fix, turned out to be a split vacuum pipe to the throttle flap actuater arm, loades better now as it should be, but thanks for your advice in this matter
