What is the law with regards to towing with a space saver wheel fitted to the towing vehicle.I have done a search and could not find any info. I tow with a Toyota Avensis
and wonder if its worth getting a proper wheel as a spare
in place of the space saver. I would be grateful for any information. And apologise if this question has been asked before.

Not sure on the legalities, think I've read somewhere it's down to the manufacturer to quote whether space saver is suitable for towing.

Regardless, having driven my Peugeot 2008 on its space saver I really wouldn't have wanted to be towing as well! Car felt awful and certainly didn't handle like it should.

I wouldn't tow with one if I needed to, even IF you could / were allowed.

Had to use the one on our Mondeo after a puncture, and even driving normally, it just didn't feel 'right'.

It was on the front right, and when I needed to brake, it pulled to the right!!! NOT a nice feeling.

Yet how many do you see people using the space saver horsing it down the motorways WAY over 70mph when there's a whacking great yellow sticker on the tyre wall saying 50mph MAX!!!????

And just to add insult to injury, many cars are only supplied with a can of puncture gunk!

What use is that if you have a blow out that destroys the WHOLE tyre!!???

How much is it to call out someone to then supply and fit a new tyre etc??

I'd rather lose a chunk of boot space than mess on with a can of gunk etc.....

Most seem to be in favour of a proper spare.

Me being hopeless with computers could not find anything in a search,And I thought it could be worth asking again as attitudes to things do change over time and thought that towing with a space saver may over time have become more acceptable, this however does not appear to be the case,It looks like a search on Ebay for a cheap spare is on the cards.

Or breaker's yard (Brownhills, Bloxwich, Willenhall...)?

I had a blow-out on a rear tyre on my E class a few years ago - whilst towing

The advice from the Merc dealer was to put the space saver on the front and move one of the front tyres to the back - and then drive sensibly to the nearest KwickFit :)

Jack up front of car - take off good tyre - put on space saver - remove jack

Then jack up rear of car - take off flat tyre - put on good tyre from front - remove jack

Place flat tyre in boot and drive to Kwikfit

???
