Returning from a lovely 4 day weekend away, we hit a bumpy bridge, caravan stabiliser system kicked in and shortly after gears started crashing, horrid grating noise then odd sounding engine. Stopped and called AA, they couldn't fix so called a tow truck. 6.5 hours after leaving the campsite we're safely home. Tow truck guy suggested we need something more powerful to tow our van. It's a bailey senator Virginia and we've got a 1.9 Galaxy tdi. So on paper we should be fine but it does seem to struggle on hills. It's quite an old car so depending on what's wrong and the cost it may be worth us changing. Hubby is a builder and we have 2 dogs and particularly like the 7 seat arrangements in the galaxy and the fact they all lift out. We've even slept in it when camping in a thunderstorm. Max we can spend is around £7k. Any advice welcome.

For £7k you will get current shape Galaxy with 2litre or 2.2litre diesel which makes a good caravan tug. You have to hope clutch & flywheel have been replaced though as thats an expensive repair.

Suspect it's the clutch and flywheel that's gone on ours - question is do you stick with the devil you know and have the repair done on an older car (we've replaced gearbox and drive shafts already) or take a chance on a newer car that you still might end up having to repair - may as well flip a coin.
