Hi Guys. anybody using a Chevrolet Captiva 2LT Diesel Manual to tow. on a tow car site it is saying it only does 20-26 MPG Towing, i have a light van only 1095kg and Tow with a 1800cc petrol mazda 6 2008 and get 28-29 MPG so i thought i would change due to not enough power when going up hills i thought the xtra horspower of 236Lb of torq would be better compaired to my Mazda 0f 124

BHP and torque is not everything, a car with less BHP and torque may tow better if the gearing is lower.

Mate tows with his 126bhp Vitara over his 150bhp+ Vectra because the Vitara has the power much lower down where you need it when towing.

The Vectra is geared for 130mph where the Vitara is only geared for 100mph.

A diesel will generally tow better than a petrol car for similar reasons, the torque will be better lower down where you need it.

My 130bhp diesel towed better than the 145bhp petrol engined version of the same car. Max torque in the petrol car was way higher than the diesel.

Hi i have just changed our 2.2 ltr 4x4 Vx Antara which is similar and yes towing was 25 - 28 mpg.
We tow 1300 kgs MTPLM, nad have done so with a Volvo V71 and Ford Focus II 2.0Ltr TDCI est, and would consider the ford the better to car to tow with than the volvo being c.a. 400 kgs heavier with the same power unit.
The Antara pulled the van like it was not there though.

hope this helps

We have the Antara 4x4 2.0l diesel. We tow our 1600Kg caravan with it, Mpg is 25-28mpg, but it just factors into the cost of going away. Pulls like a dream, in fact I always comment that the car drives smoother after we have towed with it! I drive it everyday, and find it very easy to live with.

why do cars seem better solo after towing? mine feels like an F1 car after a weekend away with the caravan.

but think yourself lucky at 25mpg for the antara. my outlander returns about 21mpg towing a 1300kg caravan. best i have ever seen is 25mpg and this is always on the return journey from somerset to the midlands. you would think going south to north would be all up hill :)

my neighbours have an antara and they say its a very good towcar especially with the self leveling suspension.

however it did strip the transfer box on the way back from their summer holiday in france this year but all replaced under the vauxhall lifetime warranty. the inconvenience of getting recovered by the AA late at night was not so good.
