Thank you. More detail:

Car is a Mitsubishi ASX, specs at the bottom of this page (http://www.mitsubishi-cars.co.uk/towing/towing-with-mitsubishi.aspx) are:

Gross vehicle weight 1,980kg
Kerb weight kg (lbs) 1,445kg
Towing capacity, braked 1,400kg

So I'm pretty confident combined weight won't exceed the 3500kg.

Just the question of whether to tow a van with MTPLM of slightly over 1400kg.

Thanks all. Who knew so complicated!

B licence max 3500
1980 + 1400 = 3380 so well within the limit

There is no law or rule which states that the towing capacity must be able to accommodate the trailer MAM or caravan MTPLM
That means it is perfectly legal to have a MTPLM of say 1430 with a 1400 towing limit as long as the actual weight of the caravan does not exceed 1400

Being realistic - probably 50kgs gets transferred to the car when towing so actually loading the caravan to 1430 will mean its ok

Sorry, got confused when you said the big diesel.

Our old ASX is a 1.8 4wd version. You'll have no problem towing your van with that. We achieved an average of 37mpg towing our caravan to Italy one year, most of the time in 6rh gear.

Same one, the 4wd. Sounds promising :))

Thanks for the advice everybody. Really helpful. Love this place. It's good to know that the softie caravanners are just as helpful as the tenters ;)

Well that IS handy. We've got the big diesel engine with the VVT and I'm confident it could pull a bus up a hill. It's a cracker of an engine. I do like it.

Oh happy day. Would really like something with fixed bunks and this could have scuppered it altogether. I appreciate it'll still be a rather high percentage of kerb weight but it rules things in rather than out.

Happy face.

you want fixed bunks and you are looking at 1400 MPLM caravans? my Bailey ranger 550/6 has fixed rear bunks, side dinette bunk beds and a double at the front.

its MLPM is only 1295kg. so thats 74% on the kerb weight of my outlander without passengers fuel etc.

one thing to consider is the outfit matching sites.

they actually add 150kg for the driver and tank of fuel to the kerb weight before calculating the ratio.

do you need to tow at 100%? cant you find a carravan with a lower MPLM? even with my combo it isnt pleasant with side winds or rutts in the road.

out of interest what to people tow 1700kg MPLM caravans with? because i am considering it.
