Travelling down to York from Newcastle on Sunday. It looks as though the wind will have died down by then (wouldn't be travelling if it was the 50mph gusts we have now) but which route would you recommend to travel? It is still going to be breezy with 17-20mph winds so any advice would be appreciated.
Caravan only weighs around a ton so not that heavy.
As we live on Teesside the A19 would always be our choice. Travelling from Tyneside the A1 could be a better option. There are major road works on The A1 and it has been closed for the past 3 weekends, worth checking with the Highways Agency website. We travelled up from the Midlands last Sunday, without the van, and were surprised how many caravans were still on the road with the winds as strong as they were, it's down to individual choice and knowing how your unit reacts in different conditions. Looking at the BBC Weather App.the wind will have moderated by 6 in the morning so towing should not be a problem. Enjoy your stay in York.
During high winds the A19 Flyover, crossing the Tees will be closed to caravans.A short detour will take you over the Newport Bridge, then back in to the A19.
We made it fine on Sunday. Bit breezy going down over bridges etc but overall good.
The wind was picking up when coming back on Tuesday and, due to packing most items in the car (so that we could ditch caravan and go) there was quite a bit of movement which was a bit concerning at times.
Still, we made it home and are now booked to go away over the new year!
Glad everything worked out okay, and have a great New Year trip.
