From one extreme to another and I'm getting earache from the wife about this car (secretly she loves it though). Its a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 automatic. One owner with full...and I mean full history. Low mileage at 91K and a good price. But I'm struggling to find a towbar and electrics for it. The main ones on Google don't go back to the 98 model. My other question re the car is about the electrics. Our current 1992 elddis has 12n/2s but I'm wondering if (seeing as her ladyship is intent on a fixed bed 'van) I should get the 13 pin and adaptors for now. Or can you go 12s/12n to 13 pin adaptor...eek!
The little crv 2.0 used to do the job but huffed and puffed a lot. I think this jeep beast won't even break a sweat. Any Jeep owners know a good towbar shop around norfolk? I rang a mobile one but he refuses to work on anything over 10 years old. In case he gets stuck half way through. Ta John
apologies to the tree huggers..myself included!

David, I tried towsure (nowt older than 10 years) and watton towing. No reply from them. I'm told there's a good one in Diss but can't find the number. Got 2 weeks before we go and if it gets cancelled my knackers are gone! I'll try broadland. Ta John

Check out if the original tow-bar ( if indeed there was one fitted originally fitted) was removed due to a recall by Jeep for an additional cross beam to be fitted. At the time of the recall there wasn't an approved EU tow-bar available, but this may have changed.

If all is not lost where is it then?
As far as I know, it never had a towbar fitted. Don't know if it got recalled. It was used to ferry tweed wearing numpties out to shoot peasants...er..phartridges

If you look on the P F Jones web site for tow bars it states that the Grand Cherokee of your year is no longer classed as a towing vehicle and tow bars are unavailable. This was due to the recall to remove towbars due to weak back end strength for fitting them.
Looks as though you will be loosing your crown jewels
This is crazy. I only got to know about this when I got a recall from Jeep, just after I had got rid of my Jeep. In the states the recall was mainly due to rear end shunts causing a fire on petrol models. They were replacing the tow bar over there but apparently there wasn't a bar available over here that met the EU spec. I felt sure that somewhere I had read that there was one becoming available. I passed my recall letter on to the dealer, try ring a dealership, Holdens in Norwich are Jeep dealers.

That was for the Jeep Cherokee and not the Grand Cherokee and also applied to a later model.
I would suggest the OP has the 13 pin plug fitted. We have the 2005 3.0L Grand Cherokee and it has not issue pulling anything so a 4L will leave it standing!
The original recall was for Cherokee and Liberty?? which I think we call the Grand Cherokee. Information released at the time listed 2007 onwards Cherokees and 1992 to 98 Grands.
To be fair I have checked the VOSA webb site this morning and cant see the OPs model.
I have seen on Jeep owners webb sites that someone with a Grand subsequently had one of these fitted
http://www.towtrust.co.uk/towbars/jeep/jeep_grand_cherokee/TJEEP1VK-jeep-grand-cherokee-wk/2011%3E
and gained approval from his insurance company. He must have had a better relationship with his insurance company than I have ever had!!
While we are on about insurance, don't forget to tick the box which asks if the vehicle has been modified, once you get the tow bar fitted. Very likely it will make no difference to the premium, except they may make charge for updating your policy.

I think that when referring to Liberty it is the spec level and not the model designation. For example Grand Cherokee Liberty is the Limited or basic version in the EU. Overland or Summit is top of the range but still a Grand Cherokee.
I, the op, have just driven the wallowing hippo home. It is vastly different to any other car I've had - except maybe my first mpv, the nissan prairie....that was a milk float. The GC is just wallowy. The car is 1999 ans the dealer assures me that it wasn't subject to any recalls - he's sold quite a few cherokees. He likes 'em too. Mine will grow on me and the wife likes the leather clad marshmallow seats..damned comfy!
It might take some weeks to work out all of the buttons and gadgets especially the built in compass - woo! Like those Clark animal shoes from the 70's with a compass inside. Just drier. Seriously though, I filled it up and it drank 70 litres and that was with 2 gallon in it. But, I don't smoke or drink and I have 2 bikes for going to work 45 weeks of the year. So it's basically our tin tent tug!
I'll ring around tomorrow and see who can fit tow bar. 13 pin and an adaptor easy peasy. Thanks all.

Go to the Jeep Forum for technical issues. You may be lucky and be able to download an owner's manual. Also here is a review of the 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The recall was only for the Cherokee not the grand cherokee

Strange, looked on the PF Jones website and cannot see anything at all mentioned about it not being classed as a towing vehicle.
