From what i read and what Juan posted earlier i think it was the TDI PD engines that were 'ropey'. Now replaced with CR commom rail engines these seem to be much more reliable.

Looks tidy, Sport is definitely the best spec, and the stiffer suspension is a boon for towing (seats are better too!). Nice car.
If you do get it, speak to EECO at Shelf for the towing equipment. Very competitive, great reputation and they know what they`re doing. They did my Passat Sport estate and my current BMW and give a lifetime warranty on their work.
Ha, Juan didn't know you were from this neck o'the woods. EECO excellent reputation but they were pretty dear compared to other quotes I got for first towbar. I wouldn't mind but I used to deal with them direct for all their print requirements. When the roles were reversed they were err...'blunt' for want of a better word. Oh well I will try again as they are only 2 mins away.

Who would want to buy a car from a company that has to lie and cheat in order to sell their vehicles. What else
are they lying or trying to cheat. Who would trust a company like that ,It wont be me.

I would doubt a lot of people would have paid any attention to what they were saying or quoting, figures wise.
A lot of buyers are just "brand faithful".
------------- XVI yes?
As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
From a mechanical pov one can trust VW absolutely. The 'cheating' relates only to their attempt to market their diesels in the US. Ford/Kia/Toyota do not market their diesels in the US so one can conclude that the reason is that they could not be made to meet US emission standards without cheating so VW diesels are no different from any other diesel on the European market.
my German colleague has a knaus Deseo 400 transport plus.
this has a MRO of just 987kg but a MPLM of 1500kg.
the reason is that its for transporting motorbikes in then can be used as a caravan when you arrive at your destination. i know his bikes he transports are no where near as heavy as the max payload of 550kg. but somewhere between the empty and the MPLM so lets say he is running 1300kg.
he has a passat blue motion estate with a 2.0DTD engine and recons its an amazing towing car. when i looked at it i thought that going by MPLM and Kerb weight he would be running 100% as the blue motion is only about 1500kg.
however the laws have changed and it seems in Germany you can tow up to the badged towing capacity of your vehicle to 2000kg for the Passat.
my colleague recons the car tows like a dream due to its electronic stability program. he has so far towed it on a 4h each way journey.
it also has a fold away towbar that 'pops up' at the push of a button.
Great choice of brilliant tow car. I have a 13 plate 140ps Passat towing a Bailey Pageant Burgundy, it's the best towcar I have had. I have a Land Rover Discovery 2 Auto too and I still prefer the Passat for towing long distances. I did 420 miles in one day with the van on the back of the Passat, air-con all the time, cruising at 60 mainly in 6th and averaged 31mpg - I was absolutely amazed. The VW emissions hype is just that, normally I don't believe car trip computers but the one in this car is absolutely spot on, I average 55mpg solo and I don't drive like a saint either. I've had 6 cars from the VW/Audi/SEAT stable with the 2.0 140/170 engines and have not had a problem with any of them.
Baileyjake its perfectly legal to tow in the UK to your max vehicle tow weight, but you'd have to be a complete idiot to tow above 100% of a cars kerbweight. Try stopping a 2 tonne caravan with a 1.5 tonne car either from going to fast or swaying.
Yes Bessie you are quite right. I did explain this to my colleague but I thought that with the electronic stability etc it would all be ok. In his defence he doesn't load the maximum payload so is probably not running 100%. The knaus deseo is very basic so it's MRO is less than 1000kg.
I run 71% and find that hairy enough. Soon trading up to a heavier van that will be exactly 85% I agree with you that it makes no sense to tow a van as heavy as the car it's just basic physics at the end of the day
