Hi, I am so CONFUSED if I wanted to tow a
2 berth caravan is there a MPV PETROL that would do the job, with good MPG or any advice
welcome, would re-mapping a 1.6 engine help???????
It would depend on the weight on the 2berth caravan. For reasonable towing performance from a 1.6 petrol mpv, say Zafira or Ford C Max you would not want to be towing more than a tonne, so caravan of no more than around 1000kg mtplm. Fuel consumption while towing would be poor, probably low-mid 20s mpg. Not worth re-mapping on non turbo engine.
Beware of buying a 7 seat small mpv as these can have very low tow weights but standard 5 seat Zaf or C Max will be ok.
It depends on your budget, if you are buying new or nearly new then one of the current small turbo petrol engines should give better towing performance than older 1.6petrol.
As above a diesel version of the same car will usually tow a lot better.
I had a 2L petrol Mondeo and swapped to a 2L diesel, the diesel requires less gear changes and high 30's to the gallon, I managed 39mpg towing, didnt quite make the 40 mark though.
The best i ever got with the petrol one was 26mpg.
Far fewer gear changes with the diesel also. Stick it in 5th gear and pop the cruise on 60mph and it will go all the way from the Midlands to the Cornwall without a gearchange, even on the steeper hills.
The petrol one would need to drop a gear or two on the steeper ones.
