I used to tow an Elddis Wisp with a Samurai (only 750kg) and it towed that fine though I had to gear right down and crawl up anything but the smallest hills. That was rated for 1300kg and I believe the Jimny is the same.
thank you, the new jimny i'm looking to buy is an 1.3 auto
which can quickly turn on the 4x4 drive
ps today we have sunshine but windy what,s it like with you
I have a 1.3 Jimny auto and it really does struggle on the hills around here without towing anything.
Máy I suggest you test drive it first on those killer long low hills
Think mine could only tow 750kgs though. I could even be less with being and auto too....
Also, you cannot use 4wd on tarmac. They do not have the viscous coupling on the transfer box.
Me personally would NOT tow with one.
They are so VERY under powered, even for shifting their own weight...
Wheezy and low geared. You can pootle about town sub 30mph in 5th gear without the engine 'chugging'. And anything over 50mph and you need earplugs for the now screaming engine.
Also just hope you don't catch a cross wind while doing it, you'll be picked up and thrown like a piece of tissue paper....
A Jimny is very uncomfortable to drive/ride in and has vey little room in the back other than for small children, if you don't have a bad back you soon will if you buy a Jimny. They are briliant off road but on normal roads are uncomfortable and under powered.
Wouldn't even consider it with a Jimmy, they are not capable of that. Probably be ok with a Vitara though.
My OH has a Vitara (1600cc 3dr), and I have been looking at getting a Whirlwind (850kg) to tow with it.
I've towed my large trailer with the Vitara, (which was about 800kg).
It handles that without any drama, although still needed a lot of gearstick work on inclines.
You still have the advantages of a proper 4x4 selectable drive system with the Vitara and a low range box, if you get into real trouble.
Not sure about later models, but earlier Vitara you could even select low range box without 4 wheel drive, so you could use the low box on tarmac surface.
Wouldn't advise that for long though, only in extreme emergency, probably put a lot of strain on rear diff etc.
