I've been looking for a car to tow a light Avondale caravan - I believe the weight is about 980kg. I've seen a 2.0 petrol Kia Sportage and was wondering whether this would be suitable of should I look for diesel?
Check out outfit here, and compare them both as a tow car.
As for the question of which is best, i would say diesel but Paul, or another member with that make should be able to answer that better than me as i dont own one.
But i do know that they are a very capable tow car, i like them.
Well when I got there it was already sold anyway! Found a 59 plate 2.0 crdi XE diesel which seems a better car all round so will probably go for that one.
I have a 2010 MK2 2.0 crdi XE 4WD - I like the car , had it since new and hopefully trading in this year for the new shape, same engine size. Never had any issues with it.
I pull a 1400KG Sprite Major 4 with no issue. Plenty of power. Only just started towing Caravan (Upgrade from TT) but so far so good.
Only downside to the car is high Tax (£280 a year) fuel economy not too bad. Doesn't have MPG reader on the XE so can't be more specific.
We've a 2009 diesel sportage towing just under 1500kg with no issues.
A quick check on caravan clubs matching service suggests that a 2007 Petrol (manual) can tow 1600kg so should have no issues towing your van. (Power output from both the petrol and diesel engines is approximately the same as well). The only issue I might suggest is the fuel cost... The diesel engine isn't great on fuel, so shudder to think what the petrol engine will be like!
