I would advise to go for the Auto and also the XE model to avoid the motors two weaknesses, with aged ones, being the TOD transfer box on XS & XT models ,and the DMF on manuals

The Hyundi and kia are from same maker but Kia cost more for servicing ETC but use same engines and a lot of common parts but parts from Kia dealer are dearer ?.?
Why dont you have Shogun remapped for bigger HP and more grunt in lower gears and exta mpg cost you less than buying another motor.

Interesting that Kia and Hyundai are from the same maker, I have been looking at the Hyundai Terracan. The Shogun wont 'remap' its 21 years old, and deserves a break from lugging a heavy twin wheeler around, plus its heavy on fuel even when not towing. The more I read about the Sorento the more I'm convinced its the right choice on my budget.

Good feedback thank you, are there any overheating gearbox fluid problems with the autos?
Gearbox fine. I towed with Sorento Auto for just over 10 years and not any problem.Have now gone to Santa Fe Auto which has a 2.2 engine and later models have nearly 50% more BHP than my Sorento had .The motor i have now is lighter in kerb weight but i find it tows just as stable as the Sorento did, but a lot better with fuel consumption.I get 4 mpg better towing and 10 mpg better solo.

My updated old model Sorento has 115000 miles on the clock and I've never had any gearbox issues with it, though it's important to renew the fluid when it's supposed to be done.
The only recent issue I had with it was the propshaft, which was sorted by a local specialist for £75.
We had a 2005 sorento 2.5 auto, 168bhp I think. V stable, comfortably towed. Personally I wouldn't go for a less powered car especially given you're caravan is noticeably heavier than our 1500kg, all that said people who do tow with that power recommend it so ignore my feelings on that. The point I was wanting to raise was mpg. I don't know what age etc you are looking at but we averaged only ~20mpg (worked out manually by how many miles from a full tank), dropping to 17 sometimes when towing. To put in perspective we live in a rural area and the few times we were on a motorway with it the mpg was better. Just wanted to mention it in case it's a factor for you.
------------- From tents to trailer tents to a tin tent to an air tent to trailer tent and back to tin tent!

A lot of my towing is done in Wales so its not an easy life for them, I'm used to fuel not been very good with the old Shogun. I notice you say that you had a 168bhp in a 2005 Sorento, I've only just started looking at them and I was under the impression the 168bhp came in late 2006, someone will confirm I'm sure.
My budget is 2004-2006 bracket so I thought I only had the 138 option.

It's a pity you're not nearer, mine's for sale!
yes its a pity, I've got my eye on a 2006 xt, but no tow bar 125,000. What's it cost to have a towbar and twin electrics fitted to these.
Looks like I'm wrong with our bhp. Don't have the car now so quickly googled and looked like I saw the wrong data. In which case, yes it was fine. As a "normal" car use when not towing I found the lack of acceleration annoying. We get stuck behind a lot of lorries and tractors on single carriageway roads around here but often with the sorento I didn't have the capacity to get past like I have with other cars so would just sit safely behind instead. Acceleration and mpg I would say are the downsides, if they don't bother you particularly then sounds like it's just what you're after.

Yes, I have a 2.0 cdti company car for most of my travel, so 'driving miss daisy' in the Sorento occasionally will be fine, we do about 6,000 a year in the Shogun. So yeah a 2004 XE auto with no rust would be fine.
As I said on earlier post stick to XE model. If you go for XS or XT be prepared for shot transfer box, so allow up to £1500 for repairs in your budget.
=====================================
I have the XT when can I expect to have the transfer box to expire on me??
If you strictly adhere to the handbook and have always maintained the best tyres on the rear you should have no problems. This means regularly checking tyres. The problem is lots of people never look at them until they need replacing. There are two sensors on the gearbox for front and rear wheel speeds.Once the rear tyres are smaller diameter, and it takes less than 1mm they rotate faster than the front ones. This keeps the clutch unit in the transfer box engaged and wears it out.Always fit new tyres to the rear. Also keep the front prop shaft well greased. As it is difficult to get the grease gun on, even some main dealers tend not to do it on a service. We have known these seize up and snap doing lots of damage whilst travelling even wrecking gear box casing and putting holes in the floor.

And as I said in an earlier post, my 2009 XS auto has 115000 miles on the clock and I've never had any gearbox trouble.
It's important on forums to differentiate between hearsay, and actual fact. It's perfectly possible to quote horror stories involving ALL makes and models of cars, but in most or many cases these are only a small percentage.
One bit of advice I'd give old model Sorento owners is to change/swap the wheels diagonally at every service. Yes it means all 4 tyres wearing evenly and having to replace them all once, but it can avoid other more serious issues.

You have said exactly what I have been saying as regards to models with the TOD box.Our family being involved in motor trade have experience with Sorentos since 03 and know most problems that can occur.
