52 miles from home on Easter Saturday the car broke down towing caravan with the Mrs noobfamily, 2 children and myself , Turbo didn't want to play .
Car now fixed all is good , just a little on the apprehensive side of towing again with the same car.

Take the van out for a tow when you are not going anywhere and without the family, prove to yourself the car is fine.

Depends what was wrong with it & how good was the repair? If you want forum members to help restore your confidence then you will need to provide full details of your car, the nature of the breakdown, full details of the fault & how much it cost to repair.

Turbo failure can involve a very expensive complete repair or a cheap repair causing turbo to fail again in months.

The repair was good , Kia Sorento 2.5 crdi , it's a car with a good service history , the last service was done by myself(1800 miles ago) I am very good on the spanners . The service exchange turbo was replaced by myself , all pipe work and inter cooler taken off and cleaned ,all new gaskets . Oil and filter changed and left to run on tick over until upto temp , oil and filter changed again , new fuel and air filter fitted , oil flow and return to turbo checked fresh water and anti freeze and flow of that checked aswel . Car had 2 adult and 2 children towing Avondale eagle . It was all well under its 1500kg , it towed great for 51 miles. Come to a long pull up a hill on the A55 towards Queensferry started to struggle on the hill . Stopped at services after the junction checked oil and water no hot brakes nothing stuck on .
Left services on slip road loads of smoke and a run away engine , stalled engine and phoned rac ,
The turbo was shot bearings had gone . I put this down oil starvation .

Turbo bearing failure allows oil into intercooler & exhaust system including dpf, also advisable to remove sump to clean sludge from oilways. Thats why a main dealer repair is so expensive.

If car is running ok now I would get shot while it still is. For your next car look for full main dealer service history, that should ensure correct oil has been used & oe filter.

Runaway turbo!!??

Rare, but not nice. Seen loads of videos of them on the 'tube'.

Do you think you'll need to take it for a really long run, as there may be oil on the exhaust system even though you've changed / cleaned everything else??

Have been driving it around for the past 2 days , it did smoke for the 1st 10 miles or so , in all honesty most of the oil had gone into the exhaust the inter cooler was very clean , the oil that was in was very good when drained out . With being a 2005 it has no dpf and it has a full dealer service history until I owned it , and it been serviced twice in the time I have owned it approx every 5000 miles over 12 months and it's only towed about 300 miles in that time .

I had a Turbo go at 10,000 miles because the pipe from the intercooler was loose causing it to over rev to achieve the same pressure, destroyed the bearing/seal. Thankfully I noticed the blue smoke coming out the back in time. Changed under warranty and ran car for another 100,000 miles with no problem.

Check around the turbo pipes to see if there has been any sign of leakage (black oil sprayed around). Maybe the previous owner has such an issue.

How many miles has it done?

Could have just been fair wear & tear then. Did you check there was correct volume of oil flowing through bearing? Turbo replacement procedure usually requires return to be detached & oil flow volume measured in container.

Oil flow was measured and was over the limit in the spec for turbo .
Have been out today with caravan on the back 48 miles mixed roads hills A roads and 60mph on duel carriageway for about 25 miles . Oil and water level good on return . Car pulled really well .probably slightly better than with the old turbo . Am happy
Proof is in the pudding as they say , have book up for along week end away this week 90 miles away . Thanks for all your input . Will let you know how I get on later .
