Hi, having just swapped my Mondeo for a 63 plate 2l 163bhp awd powershift diesel Kuga , and being very underwhelmed by its mpg under normal use, can anybody let me know what they get when towing as I havn't yet towed with it, have seen varying stats. Thanks

It doesn't seem to matter what outfit I have but I always seem to get 25-30 mpg when towing, if it drops below 25 I start to worry. Honest John has a real mpg section which gives solo figures which might be useful to check your consumption.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes have checked it out on there and is about right, if I'd known about it before I swapped I'd have thought twice! Was getting about 24 mpg from the mondeo, so hope it's not much less than that!!

I suppose the aerodynamics of the Mondeo would make it more economical than the Kuga. We had a 2.0 Galaxy with the 140 Powershift and got around 35 mpg solo and 25-30 when towing.The Focus 1.6 diesel manual did around 50 mpg solo and 25-30 when towing so I've just resigned myself to getting 25-30 whatever I drive.

Would take that, but in a article in practice caravan they got 20.9 mpg when towing. Wouldn't be happy with that!

Ouch! 20.9 mpg is bad news, let's hope you do better than that. The Kuga is on our list for next time we change so let us know how you get on.

Yikes! I'd be very unhappy getting less than 30mpg towing, and that's with our 148bhp 4wd auto model. Filled up yesterday and on normal town driving and a few shortish runs (40 minutes ish) it averaged 46mpg solo.

We had the Mondeo estate with the 163 powershift, never got over 40mpg solo until it had done over 14k - towing 1500kg gave around 23mpg.

One of the newspapers had a S Max, (same engine) on long term test and the solo results were the same as ours.

I have spoken to a few caravanners about their 140 engines (now 150 in the new model Mondeo's) and they remarked that the lower powered units were giving the same pulling strength but with at least 20% more economy.

I would expect your MPG to be worse than a Mondeo as the design is brick shaped, my Tiguan is the same.

I have a mondeo 2011 2.2L and mpg really does depend on speed. Solo I can get 50mpg if I go slow on country roads, otherwise its around 42mpg at 70mph on motorway.

Short journeys (2.5 miles) I get 29mpg in winter and 32mpg in summer.

Towing a 1500Kg caravan I get 28mpg on the motorway at 60mph and around 35mpg if doing 45mph on country roads.

Towing is all about wind resistance. That's where all the power goes and that varies with the square of the speed. So doing 50 instead of 60 will save a lot of fuel.

With a diesel they are much more efficient around their maximum torque engine speed. Unfortunately with towing you have to be in a lower gear much of the time so the engine revs are in a much less efficient speed range.

I have recently changed from a very successful Mondeo to a small SUV, after speaking to friends and finally finding a vehicle meeting our criteria, we looked everything in this band, after researching them all as towcars and solo driving it would seem they all return 25-35mpg towing. We opted for the Antara on the first tow it returned 32mpg which im more than happy with but solo its a p**s poor 38mpg big drop from the 55+mpg the mondeo returned.But from the research and speaking to a friend that tows with a Kuga its about right.

Would be happy with the 32 towing. Reset the mpg trip over the weekend and got around 44mpg local and on a run, but that was driving very carefully. At least I know it can do better, cheers, ash
